Description

AJIG * S * *5* *5**
Field of the Invention
* ** 15 * * S.. * The invention relates to jigs to facilitate the preparation of angling rigs, and especially for the preparation of hair rigs for use in carp fishing. * S * .5
: * Background and Prior Art Known to the Applicant Angling is the largest participation sport in the United Kingdom and techniques and equipment to increase the likelihood of a catch have been developed over the years. In carp fishing, an often used arrangement is known as a hair rig, as illustrated in figure 1.
The hair rig, generally indicated by 1, comprises a swivel 2 to one end of which is attached a line 3 that is attached to a hook 4 often by means of a so-called "knotless whipping". The length of line between the swivel 2 and the hook 4 is referred to as the "rig length" 5. The line 3 further extends from the hook 4 and terminates in a loop 6 known as a "hair loop". In use, bait is attached to the hair loop 6 to attract the attentions of a fish. A common form of bait is known as a boilie which may be attached to the hair loop 6 in a number of ways. In one technique, the boilie, of generally spherical form, is secured to the hair loop 6 by passing the hair loop round a circumferential indentation formed on the surface of the boilie. In other techniques, the hair loop is threaded through the centre of the boilie and the boilie is secured in place by use of a "hair stop" that is passed through the hair loop 6. The hair stop typically has the form of a small dumbbell around which the hair loop is passed to prevent the hair loop passing back through the boilie. In use, a further line is attached to the swivel, passing through a hollow lead weight and on to the angler's rod. Once attracted to the bait, a fish will suck the boilie into its mouth, bringing the hook with it. Once hooked, the angler can land the fish in the traditional way.
Experience has shown that maintaining a consistent rig length is important to the success in catching the fish. Furthermore, it is important that the size of the hair loop matches the boilies to be used as bait. It is difficult to judge these lengths when preparing a hair rig at the waterside, especially in low light conditions, and possibly with wet or cold hands. It : is an object of the present invention to attempt a solution to these problems. S... * S 55.
Summary of the Invention *5S
Accordingly, the invention provides an angling hair rig preparation jig supporting: a first series of at least two posts, spaced-apart to define the diameter of a hair loop to be formed; a second series of at least two posts spaced-apart to define, with a post of a third series of posts, a desired rig length; and at least three posts comprising or forming part of said third series, and being spaced apart in a triangular configuration, the spacing between two of said at least three posts being larger than the length of a swivel to be used in said hair rig.
Preferably, the jig the first series of posts comprises a series of paired posts, each said pair of posts defining a range of diameters of hair loops to be formed.
In any aspect of the invention, it is further preferred that the said first series of posts comprises two posts, at least one of which is moveable to allow the spacing between said posts to be adjusted by a user.
Also in any aspect of the invention, it is further preferred that the said second series of posts comprises more than two posts thereby defining a range of rig lengths to be formed.
Also in any aspect of the invention, it is further preferred that the posts of said second series have line guides disposed on the shank of said posts. This prevents the line (and indeed the hook) from slipping off the post during preparation of the hair rig.
Also in any aspect of the invention, it is further preferred that the said third series of posts comprises four posts disposed about the vertices of an irregular quadrilateral.
Also in any aspect of the invention, it is further preferred that the posts of said first series of posts have a smooth surface, and are of substantially constant cross-section. This :. enables the line to be readily slipped off the posts during rig preparation. * * S..
: *s.* 15 Also in any aspect of the invention, it is further preferred that the rig further comprises S.. * indicia indicating the length of hair loop and/or rig length formable by use of selected posts.
*..S.. * I
* * Also in any aspect of the invention, it is further preferred that the posts hinge about the surface of a base board. In this way, they can be moved out of position for convenient storage, with only those posts required to for a rig of a desired length being brought into play.
Also in any aspect of the invention, it is further preferred that posts slide from a first position wherein the top portion, in use, of the post is substantially below the envelope of a base board to a second position where the post extends from the surface of the base board.
Also in any aspect of the invention, it is further preferred that the either or both of the first or second series of posts comprises a post slideably mounted in a track on the jig, thereby allowing the relative spacing between posts to be adjusted.
Also within the scope of the invention is a storage box incorporating ajig as described above, and comprising a base board that forms the lid of the storage box.
Also within the scope of the invention is an angling hair rig preparation jig substantially as described herein, with reference to, and as illustrated by any appropriate combination of figures 2-18.
The invention also provides an angling hair rig preparation jig as described above, and further comprising instructions for preparing an angling hair rig as described herein.

DescriDtion of the Preferred Embodiments Figure 2 illustrates, in perspective view, an angling hair rig preparation jig, generally indicated by 7, according to the present invention. The jig 7 comprises a base board 8 of generally rigid construction, and preferably manufactured from a waterproof, plastics material.
Extending from the base board 8 is a first series 10 of posts 11 extending from the base board in a spaced-apart configuration defining the diameter of a hair ioop to be formed.
In the embodiment illustrated, ten such posts II are provided arranged as a series of five pairs, each pair of posts having a different spacing. The use of these hair loop forming posts will be described in more detail below.
* Also provided is a second series 12 of posts 13. In this embodiment, eight such posts 13 : *.* 15 are provided. S.. S
I S..
Also provided, is a third series 14 of posts 15, again extending from the base board 8.
The relative spacing of one of the posts 13 of the second series 12 and one of the posts 15 S. : * * of the second series 14 defines a desired rig length, as will be described in more detail below.
Figures 3 and 4 illustrate, in perspective view, the use of a pair of posts 11 from the first series 10 of posts in the formation of a hair loop 6. A length of line 3 is folded back on itself at one end to form a loop, and a slip knot is loosely tied using a double portion. The loosely-tied knot is slipped over one post I 1A, and the ioop is slipped over a second post JiB as illustrated in figure 3. The three ends of the line 3 are then pulled taught so tightening the line between the two posts I IA and JiB and tightening the knot around the first post I IA as illustrated in figure 4. The line can then be slipped off the posts and fully tightened to secure the knot, thereby forming a hair loop 6 of consistent diameter.
The spacing between the two posts 1 IA and 1 lB effectively defines half the circumference of the hair loop 6 to be formed. It is important, therefore, that the surface of the post 11 is smooth to allow the hair loop so formed to be readily slipped off the post.
Furthermore, having posts of a substantially constant cross-section, for example, cylindrical as illustrated, further facilitates the removal of the loop from the posts.
The short end of line 3 may then be trimmed adjacent the knot on the hair loop 6 to produce a neat loop. The remaining long length of line may then be affixed to a hook, for example as illustrated in figures. The line 3 is passed through the eye of a hook, wrapped a number of times around the shank of the hook, and passed back through the eye. When the line is tightened, this forms a "knotless whipping" on the hook thus securing it in position. Whilst this is a popular and preferred method for attaching the hook to the line, other methods of securing the hook are envisaged.
Use of the rig 7 for attaching a swivel 2 to produce a desired rig length is illustrated in figure 6. On an end loop of a swivel 2 is slid over one of the posts ISB in the second series 14 of posts. The hook 4 is then hooked around one of the posts 13A of the second : *.* 15 series 12 of posts. The choice of post 13 defines the rig length to be formed as the distance, indicated by 16 between the post l3A so chosen and the second eye of the swivel 2. The free end of the line 13 is passed through this second eye of the swivel 2 as illustrated and wrapped around the posts 15 of the third series 14 as will be illustrated in I. : * more detail in figures 7-10.
Figures 7-10 illustrate, in perspective view the use of the third series 14 of posts to attach the line 3 to a swivel 2 to create a desired rig length 16. The line 3 from the hook 4 is passed through the second eye of a swivel 2, itself hooked over the post I 5B. The line is brought back and wrapped sequentially around posts I 5A and I SC as illustrated in figure 8, the line is then passed around post 15D and wrapped around the double loop of line 3 extending between post I 5A and the swivel 2. The arrangement of the posts is such that the distance between post ISA and post I 5B is large enough to accommodate the length of a swivel 2 and leave a length of looped line sufficient to wrap the end of the line around it. In principle, one of the posts (15C) could be omitted, leaving a triangular configuration, but the use of this additional post keeps the line free of the whipping formed around the loop and therefore greatly facilitates its use.
As illustrated in figure 9, the line may then be slipped off posts I 5A, 1 5C and I 5D to begin to secure the line to the eye of the swivel 2. The free end of the line 3 is pulled tight and, as illustrated in figure 10, this causes the line to form a knot through the eye of the swivel 2. A hair rig has then been prepared with a defined rig length and a defined hair loop diameter.
Figure 11 illustrates, in plan view, a particularly preferred embodiment of an angling hair rig preparation jig. In this embodiment, a first set of indicia 17 is provided, denoted by yl to y5, such indicia indicating the diameter of a hair loop to be formed by each pair of posts 11 of the first series 10 of posts. Also provided is a second set of indicia 18, denoted by xl to xX indicating the length of hair rig to be formed when a hook is hooked around any individual post 13 for attachment to a swivel on 1 of the posts 15 of the third :... set of posts. Such indicia might have the form of lengths (e.g. in centimetres or inches) or S...
might be colour-coded to correspond to a similarly-coded size of boilie or desired rig : **., 15 length.
Figure 12 illustrates, in cross-sectional view, a preferred design of post 11 of the first *:* seriesofposts, orapost 15 ofthethirdseriesofposts. Thepost 11,15 comprisesa generally elongate portion 19 of smooth, cylindrical Construction, so sized as to pass readily through the eye of a swivel 2 to be used in preparation of an angling hair rig. The post 11, 15 also has a lower, generally cylindrically shaped member 20 that may be engaged in a corresponding hole formed in the base board 8, not illustrated. Between these two portions is located a generally disc-shaped member 21 that sits, in use on the surface of the base board 8. This construction allows the posts to be readily removed from the board for storage when not in use.
Figure 13 illustrates, in cross-sectional view, a preferred design of post 13 of the second series 12 of posts. The post 13 is of generally cylindrical construction, one end of which has a diameter chosen to fit within the curved portion of a hook 4 to be used in the hair rig. This larger diameter end 22 has a series of guides 23 formed as annular indentations around the circumference of the post located on its surface. These guides serve to secure a hook 4 in position around the post 13 when the jig is in use. The guides 23 could also have the form of raised portions disposed around the surface of the post 13. At the other end of the post 13 is a cylindrical portion 24 of smaller diameter sized to fit within a corresponding hole in the base board 8, not illustrated.
Figures 14-15 illustrate, in cross-section a further and particularly preferred configuration of posts 11, 13, 15 where the posts are hingeably-attached to the base board 8 by a hinge member 25. In this way, the posts 11, 13, 15 may be moved from a first configuration, illustrated in figure 14, where the post is substantially contained within the envelope of the base boardS to a second configuration, illustrated in figure 15, where the post ends from the surface of the base board 8. S. * . * S.. ****
Figure 16 shows a plan view of this configuration of post further illustrating the provision of detents 26 to reversibly lock the post 11, 13, 15 in either of the two configurations. By * constructing the posts in this way, individual posts may be raised, as required, to create S..
hair rigs of desired lengths. When not in use, the posts refract into the envelope of the base board for more convenient storage and transport. In alternative configurations, the posts may be slideably mounted in holes extending into, or through, the base board 8 allowing them to be pulled out when required, and pushed back below the envelope for base board 8 when not in use.
Figure 17 illustrates, in plan view, an alternative embodiment of the invention. In this embodiment, the first series 10 of posts 11 is disposed in a collinear fashion. Any two of the posts 11 may be used to form a hair loop 6 of desired diameter. The second series of posts 13 is disposed around the periphery of the circular base board 8 in this configuration, a hook 6 may be hooked around one of the posts 13 and the line 3 wrapped around the outside of the arcuate series of posts 13 before being attached to a swivel located on one of the posts 15 of the third series 14 of posts.
Figure 18 illustrates yet a further embodiment of the invention wherein the first series 10 of posts 11, for forming the hair loop, comprises a first fixed post 11 C and a second moveable post I ID slideably mounted a track 27 allowing the spacing of the two posts I IC, I lD to be varied, as required, to form a hair loop of desired diameter. The same configuration of fixed and slideably-mounted posts may be used also for the second series 12 of posts 13. a a * a.. **** * I ***. * .* a. * S.. *
