Abstract

Azo dyes are obtained by coupling with the usual components tetrazo compounds of chlorosubstituted 4 : 41-diaminodiphenylmethanes or homologues thereof. Some of the products may be further diazotized and coupled with other components, or they may be further coupled with diazo compounds. Some of the dyes dye wool in varied shades fast to washing, fulling, and sulphur; others dye cotton, while some are applicable as lake or pigment dyestuffs. According to examples, tetrazotized 4 : 41-diamino-3 : 31-dichlorodiphenylmethane is coupled with 2-naphthol-4-sulphonic acid, 1-naphthol-3 : 8-disulphonic acid, 1-acetamino - 8-naphthol - 3 : 6-disulphonic acid, 2-naphthylamine-6-sulphonic acid, 1-(21-chlor-51-sulphophenyl)-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone, or b -naphthol. A table is given showing the properties of the wool dyestuffs obtainable from 4 : 41-diamino-3 : 31-dichlordiphenylmethane and 2-naphthol-4-, 6-, or 8-sulphonic acid, 1-naphthol-4- or 5-sulphonic acid, 1-naphthol-3 : 6-, 3 : 8-, or 4 : 8-disulphonic acid, 2-naphthol- 3 : 6-disulphonic acid, chromotropic acid, ethylchromotropic acid, 1-amino-8-naphthol-4-sulphonic acid, 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone sulphonic acid; 4 : 41-diamino - 3 : 31 : 6 : 61 - tetrachlordiphenylmethane or 4 : 41-diamino-3 : 31-dimethyl-2 : 21-dichlordiphenylmethane and 1-(21-chloro-51-sulphophenyl)-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone. The following cotton dyestuffs are mentioned:- disazo dyes from 4 : 41-diamino-3 : 31-dichlordiphenylmethane and 2 mols. 1 : 8 : 3 : 6-acid or 2 : 5 : 7-acid (alkaline coupling), or 1 mol. 1 : 8 : 3 : 6-acid (acid coupling) and 1 mol. 2-naphthol (alkaline coupling): tetrakisazo dyes by coupling the tetrazo compound with 2 : 5 : 7-acid, rediazotizing, and coupling with phenyl-2 : 5 : 7-acid; or by coupling the tetrazo compound with 1 : 8 : 3 : 6-acid (acid or alkaline coupling), rediazotizing and coupling with diazotized 4-nitraniline (alkaline or acid coupling). Lake dyestuffs are described from 4 : 41-diamino-3 : 31-dichlorodiphenylmethane and 2-naphthol, 2-naphthol-3-carboxylic acid or the anilide thereof, or 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone. Chloro - 4 : 41-diaminodiphenylmethanes and homologues thereof are obtained by condensing the corresponding chloranilines with formaldehyde and converting the methylene compound so produced into the diarylmethane derivative by the action of a salt of a primary arylamine in presence of acid.
