Heating by electricity.-In heating water in an iron or other vessel or for continuous or intermittent supply, the heating element is suspended within an electrically insulating casing arranged within a water container so that there is a high electrical resistance through the water between the element and the inlet and outlet ports of the container. The heater 19, Fig. 1, may be arranged within a porcelain casing 20 having openend pipes 21, 22 on each side of the heater for the flow of water, the casing 20 being secured by stirrups 23 to the water container 10. The container 10 has inlet and delivery pipes 16, 12 and a removable cover 11. The casing 20 is closed by a detachable insulating lid 18 carrying the heater 19 and its leads 28 and held in position by an offset bar and a central locking bolt 30, the bar engaging at its ends under side bars 34 and the bolt 30 passing through the bar and engaging a metal washer in the lid 18. The leads 29 pass through an apertured cover 31 secured by bolts 32. Rubber or like water-tight gaskets 15, 24, 27 are provided in the joints between the container 10, the cover 11, the casing 20 and the lid 18. In a modification, Fig. 4, the casing 20 has inlet and outlet ports 35, 36 and is suspended in the water container 38 by a flange 37. The container 38 has a supply pipe 40 from a cistern 41 and delivery and return ports 42, 44. The lid of the casing may be locked in position by inserting an electric plug on the leads and a central opening may be provided in the cover of the container to permit mounting of the electric plug. The casing may be suspended by stirrups from the cover of the container.
