Abstract

244,730. Bergius, F. Dec. 18, 1924, [Convention date]. Hydrogen.-In the hydrogenation of coal and hydrocarbons under high pressure, the waste gases containing methane and some hydrogen are converted into gases rich in hydrogen for re-use in the hydrogenation process by subjecting them to a double treatment with steam at different temperatures. The first treatment with steam is effected at a high temperature and leads to the conversion of the methane into hydrogen and carbon monoxide, whilst the second treatment transforms the resulting carbon monoxide catalytically in known manner into hydrogen and carbon dioxide, which latter is then removed in the usual way. In the plant shown in the Figure, the gases from a hydrogenation chamber 1 first pass through a condenser 2, liquid separator 3, and devices 4, 5 for removing benzine and sulphuretted hydrogen respectively; after mixing with steam admitted by the pipe 7, the gases are conducted to a regeneratively-superheated apparatus 6 in which the first high-temperature reaction is effected; thence the gases pass, after admixture with further steam or even water from the pipe 9, to the low-temperature apparatus 8 containing such a catalyst as iron oxide; the issuing gases are then cooled in the cooler 10, compressed by the pump 11, freed from carbon dioxide in the scrubber 12, further compressed by the pump 13, and finally introduced into the hydrogenation chamber 1. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the process may be applied to the preparation of gases rich in hydrogen from gases containing methane and some hydrogen, such as those from coke works. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
