Abstract
n-Propyl-, isopropyl-, n-butyl- and iso-butyl-naphthalene sulphonic acids are prepared by the interaction of the appropriate alcohol upon naphthalene or naphthalene sulphonic acid in the presence of sulphuric acid. More than one alkyl group may be substituted in the nucleus.ALSO:Ammonium bicarbonate free from other compounds of ammonia and carbon dioxide is obtained by crystallizing it from an initially hot aqueous solution and introducing carbon dioxide while the crystallization continues as the solution cools. Instead of pure carbon dioxide gases rich in carbon dioxide may be used which may also contain a small quantity of ammonia. The process is facilitated by the addition of a substance which influences the surface tension of the solution, and especially a substance which increases the surface tension. As examples of the latter are mentioned ammonium sulphide, sugar and oily liquids such as benzene, petrol, carbon tetrachloride, iron carbonyl, or oils obtained from coal or lignite tar. Propyl and butyl substituted naphthalene sulphonic acids which reduce the surface tension may also be used. A tar oil before use may be emulsified by means of ammonia solution. In an example an ammonia solution is saturated with highgrade carbon dioxide while stirring and without cooling. The crystals which separate as the solution cools are removed and dried in a revolving furnace by means of heated air.
