Abstract

An insert between an external masonary wall and an internal abutting wall provides a structural junction that prevents a cold or damp bridge. The insert may comprise masonry bed reinforcement 2 connecting the walls and high compression strength insulation material 1 between the walls. The insulation material 1 may be formed with ribs to deflect moisture outwards.

Description

Improvements to masonarv buiLding Structural returns from the external
wall to within a building need to prevent damp penetration and cold bridging.
With a cavity wall this is overcome by separating, not structurally, but thermally and by vertical d.p.cs, the external skin from the inner skin which the internal partition structural return acts with.
Where the two skinned cavity wall is illiminated, as envisaged in my patent GB2345071 there is a need for direct structural support from internal partition return to the external wall and to overcome the cold bridging and damp penetration that could occur.
This patent application seeks to provide a thermallwarm bridge and a vertical cLp.c that can adequately cope with and transmit structural forces, shear, compression and tension to provide a firm structural tie between internal partition walls and the external masonary skin.
The warm structural and damp proof bndge herein envisaged and illustrated on drawing No I Fig 1 is between a single leaf brick external wall and an concrete block inner partition wall.
The bridge 1 would consist of firm high-grade rigid insulation and damp proof material or firm insulation enclosed within an outer layer of a strong damp proof material.
Tension between the brick external wall and the inner block partition would be carried by inserting brickwork reinforcement 2 or similar in the horizontal joint above and below the aircrete block i.e. every third brick course. This combination would thus form a strong structural joint or junction, able to transmit forces of tension, shear and compression whilst preventing a cold bridge but providing a vertical damp proof course.
Drawing No 1 Fig I envisages sloping ridges or grooves 3 in the non contact sides of the bridge, sloping downwards and outwards to the external masonary leaf, to deflect and direct any moisture, outwards.
Further strength to the bridge and the structural junction, over and about the compressive and sheer strength of the insulation material, could be provided by enveloping the insulation in bands of stronger material such as glass fibre, nylon, plastic, metal, carbon fibre or similar. The bands or ridges of stronger material would also form a stronger key or bond, with the joint mortor and surrounding masonaiy.
To aid and speed positioning and laying of the warm bridge and reinforcing mesh it is envisaged that these may be joined as assembled as shown in Drawing No I Fig 2.
To prevent cold or damp bridging via the horizontal mortar joint, it is envisaged that the vertical height of the bridge will be equal to the height of the concrete block plus the thickness of the motor bed, with the reinforcement embedded in the bridge, to exclude mortar above and below each bridge and prevent the mortar forming a cold/damp bridge.
The pattern of those enclosing strengthening ribs or ridges could be of any configuration. Diamond pattern ridges 4 would provide for simultaneous vertical and horizontal structural transmission and the outward, downward sloping ridge 5 could be higher to provide for moisture deflection as beforehand described.
To further strengthen the junction it is envisaged that the thickness of the insulation bridge could be alternatively varied to provide a block bonded junction 5 as illustrated on drawing No 2 fig 1.
In this case it may not be necessaiy for the reinforcing mesh to extend into the inner block bed joists thus further illuminating cold bridging at the junction.
As an alternative to steel reinforcement, plastic, nylon, carbon fibre or similar lies across the junction, perhaps with dovetail or fishtail ends 6 could be utilised. These would help to illuminate cold bridging and by setting them into the insulation material thus excluding bridging motar and providing moisture barrier ridges or collars 8 situated near the inner face of the wall, prevent any damp bridging.
