Abstract
243,978. Arnold, C., (Dow Chemical Co.). April 27, 1925. Magnesium chloride.-The dehydration of magnesium chloride crystals is effected by mixing the normal crystal with partially dehydrated magnesium chloride (preferably MgCl22H2O) both insolid form, and then heating the mixture in a current of hot combustion gas and air to a temperature of 115‹ C. gradually rising to 350‹ C., thus avoiding fusion. The product at this stage is mainly the dehydrated salt, MgCl22H2O, and a part of this is used to mix with the next quantity of normal crystals. The second stage of the dehydration is effected in hydrochloric acid gas at a temperature of 200‹ C. gradually rising to 500‹ C. The first stage may be effected in a shelf drier, Fig. 1, the salt entering at 5 and leaving at 6, while flue gas enters at 7 and air at 9 and the gases leave at 8. The second stage may be effected in a rotary tube 12 which receives dry hydrochloric acid gas from a pipe system 14 including in its circuit two drying towers 13 for use alternately for drying the gas. The sulphuric acid from the towers is concentrated in a concentrator 16 and used again. Specification 4417/89 is referred to.
