Electromagnets. - Solenoidoperating-mechanism for actuating circuit-breakers comprises a number of solenoids energized successively or having different operating characteristics and acting at separate places on a " floating " member connected with breaker, each solenoid when energized partly actuating the breaker independently of the other solenoids. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, pot solenoids 11 energized by closing relays 15 have their plungers 12 pivoted to a bar 13 which is pivoted at 16 to the operated breaker mechanism, the bar 13 itself having no fixed pivot. In modifications the solenoids may be located on opposite sides. of the " floating " bar. Time-lag devices may be employed between the solenoids and trip-free mechanism may be used with the breaker.
