Abstract
243,827. Siemens Bros. & Co., Ltd., and Baker, E. W. Sept. 10, 1924. Slots, reversers, and like apparatus.-In a replacer or reverser of the kind in which a lever forming the armature of an electromagnet constitutes a coupling member the magnet acts in a direction parallel with that of the force to be counterbalanced thereby. The signal rod 3 carries a casing 1, 2 in which an electromagnet 7 is fixed and its armature 8 is pivoted. The operating rod 4 passes slidably through the casing and carries a casting 18 with a recess in which a roller 21 is mounted. Upward movement of the rod 4 causes roller 21 to bear against a part 16 of the armature at a point 25, Fig. 4, to the left of a vertical line 26 through the armature pivot 12, so that the armature is moved in clockwise direction clear of the roller unless held by attraction of the magnet. If the magnet be de-energized, continued movement of rod 4 does not move the casing, but, if energized, the attracted armature forms an abutment by which the rod 4 moves the casing and the signal rod 3, placing the signal at " clear." On subsequent de-energization of the magnet, release of armature 8 allows the signal to return to " danger " under gravity. Casting 18 carries a projection 23, or, according to the Provisional Specification, a roller, engaging a projection 17 on the armature, on downward movement of rod 4. This serves to return the armature to the attracted position and, with the armature in that position, serves to return rod 3 positively to " danger " position. Clockwise movement of armature 8 is limited by a stop 27. The upper end of casting 18 is formed as a piston 20 with leather packing cups working in a cylindrical part 5 of the casing communicating with the rest of the casing by a duct having a pin valve 28. The arrangement serves as a dashpot damping the return to " danger " of the released signal. The armature 8 may be provided with a buffer action spring.
