Abstract
A brake light system comprising a cluster or series of light emitting diodes (LEDs) or conventional bulbs fitted to the rear of the vehicle. As the car brakes the number of lights illuminated would be indicative of the degree of deceleration, the harder the braking the more bulbs are lit. The measure of the braking force could be determined by a pressure transducer attached to the brake hose system, a strain gauge fitted to the brake pedal, an accelerometer or a link with the anti lock braking system (ABS). The device may be fitted to the vehicle during manufacture or as an after sale accessory.
Description

Description

Scaled Brake Light It can be very hard to tell how fast a car in front is pulling up, this system will give the driver behind much more information than a conventional set of brake lights. It will reduce accidents and keep traffic flowing better because drivers will be able to see exactly how hard the person in front is braking. This will mean the driver could make a much better decision as to how to react to a situation.

This idea is a safety system for any road going vehicle. The concept is that the harder the vehicle is braking, the more brake light area will be illuminated. This would give drivers behind an idea of how hard the car in front is braking, meaning they can respond more appropriately.

The scale would be done with a series of LED's or conventional bulbs. Starting at the lowest point on the brake light an initial section would initially light up to indicate a small braking force had been applied. As the braking force becomes larger more rows of lights are illuminated. This could be in any direction, up, down, left or right.

This type of system would be particularly easy to implement in a car with brake lights which run up the rear roof supports. In this case the higher the lights are lit the harder the car is braking.

This system could be implemented as an after market unit to attach to rear windscreen, this would be an additional system on top of the standard brake lights system. It could be attached inside the rear windscreen and with an accelerometer inside detect how hard the vehicle is braking and illuminate LED's or bulbs appropriately. This would be wired into the vehicles power supply.

Or the idea could be part of original car and linked to one of the existing systems or using a new system (as outlined in the next section) to detect braking force and illuminate LED's or bulbs as appropriate.

Figure 1 shows an array of LED's. This is an example of how the system could be laid out. When the brake pedal is initially touched the first two or three rows of LED's would come on like a conventional braking system, then the other rows would light up according to how hard the brake is being applied by the driver.

Ways which level of illumination can be determined Line pressure -The pressure could be determined with a pressure transducer attached to the brake hose system and the result would relate to the number of LED's or conventional bulbs which are on.

Force on pedal -The force could be measured using two strain gauges on the top and bottom of brake lever. These gauges would be wired into a Wheatstone bridge and the change in resistance in the gauges would produce a change in voltage. This voltage would be related to pressure force on the pedal and in turn determine the number of LED's or conventional bulbs which are lit.

ABS -The system of lights could also be connected to the ABS braking system. The lower the level of grip left for braking, the more LED's or bulbs will be on.

Accelerometer -This way of controlling how many lights are illuminated would be a secondary system, the first would be a conventional switch operated brake light and the accelerometer would control additional bulbs or LED's. The greater the deceleration the more LED's or bulbs would be lit.
