Abstract

Theft of fuel from a vehicle fuel tank 10 is monitored by detecting both when and where fuel is being siphoned from the fuel tank. The amount of fuel in the tank is measured using a fuel quantity sensor 12 (e.g. measuring fuel level, mass or volume) along with the position of the vehicle (e.g. using GPS sensor 14), and the location of the vehicle is stored. An indication of the vehicle activity may be measured (either from the position of the vehicle or from determining whether the vehicle ignition is on or off). Simultaneous removal of fuel and introduction of another fluid, such as water, may also be detected. The status of the fuel cap (on or off) may also be measured. If fuel theft is detected a signal S by communication means 16 may be transmitted to the police.

Description

VEHICLE FUEL MONITORING SYSTEM

Siphoning fuel from vehicles such as trucks and fuel tankers by their own drivers is a problem, which particularly impacts truck owners and fuel tanker owners when fuel prices are high.

A vehicle fuel monitoring system is known which monitors the fuel level in the tank.

WO 2004007344 discloses a fuel theft detection system which captures and records the fuel level in the vehicle's fuel tank at regular, pre-detennined intervals. Only the fuel level and times are stored. Dubious changes in the fuel level can be investigated.

However, excuses such as donating fuel to a fellow driver or difficult terrain or driving on a puncture are given and it is difficult for truck owners to prove to the contrary.

It is also known to use a satellite tracking system to follow the movement of a vehicle. A person can monitor if a vehicle is regularly visiting a site where diesel siphoning occurs.

This system can be very time intensive and is mostly unnecessary.

It is also known to sense if a fuel cap is removed from a tank to allow access to the tank.

This system is used to stop a driver from driving a vehicle without the cap attached.

An aim of the invention is to provide a quicker system for detecting.

According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a fuel tank monitoring system comprising a fuel tank, a fuel quantity sensor arranged to sense quantity of fuel in the tank, and a vehicle inactivity sensing device arranged to sense if vehicle is inactive, characterized in that fuel tank monitoring system comprises location saving means which :* is arranged to save location of vehicle when the vehicle is inactive and when the quantity of fuel in the tank is reducing. * ** * * I I.. * ** S * S * * S.

Preferäbly, the system comp ses a signal communication means arranged to tTansmit a signal (to a remote location such as to the Police) when the vehicle is inactive and when the quantity of fuel In the tank is reducing.

In this way siphoning is detected as it occurs. There Is no delay before the ignition Is switc'hed on.

Vehicle inactivity sensing device maybe a position sensor arranged to sense position of vehicle. Position sensor may be arranged to use GPS, Galileo or the Tike. Vehicle inactivity sensing device may sense if vehile Ignition switch is switched on, and if Ignition switch is not on switched on, the vehicle is assumed to be stationary.

According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a vehicle comprising a system according to the rt aspect of the invention.

According to a third aspect of the invention there is provided a method of sensing fuel in fuel tank comprising sensing fuel in a vehicle fuel tarik when the vthicle ignition sviitch is off.

According to a fourth aspect of the Invention there Is provided a method of sensing fuel *in fuel tank comprising sensing fuel in a vehicle fuel tank when the vehicle is stationary.

An aim of the invention is to provide an improved vehicle fuel monitoring system.

:.: According to a fifth aspect of the invention there is provided a vehicle fuel tank monitoring assembly compriáing a fuel tank, a fuel sensor arranged to sense the mass or volume or level of fuel in the tank, and a location sensor such as GPS arranged to sense the location of the fuCi tank, characterised in that the vehicle fuel tank monitoring system is arranged so that when the mass or volume or level of fuel in the tank is sensed as increasing the vehicle location can be saved.

According to a sixth aspect of the invention there is provided a vehicle fuel tank monitoring assembly comprising a fuel tank, a fuel sensor arranged to sense the mass or volume or level of fuel in the tank, and a location sensor such as GPS arranged to sense the location of the fuel tank, characterised in that the vehicle fuel tank monitoring system is arranged so that when the mass or volume or level of fuel in the tank is sensed as reducing at more than a predetermined threshold rate the vehicle location can be saved.

According to a seventh aspect of the invention there is provided a vehicle fuel tank monitoring assembly comprising a fuel tank, a fuel sensor arranged to sense the mass or volume or level of fuel in the tank, and a location sensor such as GPS arranged to sense the location of the fuel tank, characterised in that thà vehicle fuel tank monitoring system is arranged so that when a fuel cap of the vehicle is removed from the vehicle so as to allow access to tank the vehicle location is saved.

According to a eighth aspect of the invention there is provided a vehicle fuel tank monitoring assembly comprising a fuel tank, a fuel sensor arranged to sense the mass or volume or level of fuel in the tank, and a location sensor such as GPS arranged to sense the location of the fuel tank, characterised in that the vehicle fuel tank monitoring system is arranged to sense if fuel is being removed from the tank and if liquid is simultaneously being introduced to the tank, and arranged so when fuel is removed and liquid is being introduced the vehicle location can be saved.

In this way, fleet owners and fuel tanker owners can monitor not only if fuel is being siphoned from their vehicles but also pinpoint the location at which it is taking place. It also informs where fuel tank is filled, which makes it more difficult for drivers to fill the vehicles using fuel from an unauthorized or black market vendor. * ** * S S 5.5 5

The predetermined threshold rate is preferably set to take into account the vehicle fuel consumption rate range plus an allowance. +

The vehicle fuel monitoring system may be arranged to sense if a vehicle is inactive, e.g. by periodically sampling vehicle location, and may comprise means to high1ifl if vehicle is inactive. This is useful because it is considerably more likely for fuel to be siphoned when the vehicle is inactive.

The vehicle fuel monitoring system may comprise a signal communication means which is arranged to transmit a signal informing of location at which the quantity of fuel in the tank is sensed as a) increasing, b) reducing at more than a predetermined threshold rate or c) when a fuel cap of the vehicle is removed from the vehicle so as to allow access to tank. This ensures that for example owners are promptly aware.

The vehicle fuel monitoring system may comprise a second sensor which senses if a liquid is simultaneously introduced into the tank as fuel is removed. This can be done for example by sensing the direction of flow of liquid entering and/or being removed from the tank.

According to a ninth aspect of the invention there is also provided a vehicle fuel tank comprising a water sensor arranged to sense if water is present in the fuel in the tank.

Petrol does not mix with water. A suitable water sensor may be used.

Vehicle inactivity sensing device may be a position sensor arranged to sense position of vehicle. Position sensor may be GPS, Galileo or the like. Vehicle inactivity sensing :. device may sense if vehicle ignition is on, and if ignition is not on, vehicle is assumed to :..::: be stationary. **S.

A vehicle fuel tank monitoring assembly will now be described by way of example only, :. and with reference to Figures 1 and 2.

:.: . Referring to Figure 1, a vehicle fuel tank monitoring assembly 8 comprises a fuel tank 10. A fuel quantity sensor 12 is arranged to sense the quantity of fuel in the tank 10.

S

When sensor 12 senses that fuel is increasing or fuel is reducing at more than vehicle consumption rate a signal is initiated and sent to a remote monitoring device.

A vehicle location sensor in the form of GPS or Galileo 14 senses position of vehicle and saves position e.g. on solid state memory. if desired, device 14 can send a signal S by signal communication means 16 e.g. to headquarters, police, Referring to Figure 2, a vehicle fuel tank monitoring assembly 18 comprises a tank 19. A Fuel pipe 20 is connected to tank 19, and a fuel cap 22 is fitted to pipe 20 to seal pipe 20 and prevent access to tank 19. A transponder 24 and a receiver 26 are arranged on the cap 22 and pipe respectively. When distance between transponder 24 and receiver 26 exceeds a preset (pre-programmable) threshold, location sensor (not shown for conciseness) senses and saves location of vehicle and if necessary a signal S is generated and sent to HQ or police or other. * . * *** *.** * I ***. * ** * .
