Description

I
INTEGRATED PLUMBING SYSTEM
FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention relates to integrated plumbing systems. The invention particularly relates to a pre-plumbed integrated plumbing system.
BACKGROUND
An integrated plumbing system is effectively a modular sanitary system that is suitable for commercial, healthcare or private washroom or environments. An integrated plumbing system comprises modular elements that connect together easily to provide sanitary facilities such as a toilet, urinal, washbasin, showers etc. Integrated plumbing systems typically include a frame to which a sanitary ware unit is secured. Existing integrated plumbing systems are constructed such that the modular sanitary ware must be fitted to the frame prior to fitting, connecting and subsequently testing the plumbing for the system. Indeed, in the integrated plumbing system provided by Armitage Venesta, the plumbing for transferring water from the water service pipes to the sanitary ware and for transferring sewage from the sanitary ware to the sewage system cannot be fitted, connected to the water supply and sewage system and tested for leaks until the sanitary ware is secured to the frame. Since the connecting and testing of the plumbing occurs during the construction phase of a site, e.g. before the internal structure has been completed, the sanitary ware is at risk of being broken, damaged or even stolen. Furthermore, since the fitting, connecting and testing of the plumbing is complex, : 25 the installation and repair of the integrated plumbing system takes a significant amount of time and must be carried out by a professional plumber with specialised tools. * ** * ** *. *

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The integrated plumbing system according to the present invention essentially comprises a frame, a sanitary ware module and pre-fitted plumbing means for transferring water from the water supply pipe to the sanitary ware module and for transferring sewage from the sanitary ware module to the sewage system.
The frame is a rigid structure comprising upright members and crossmembers. When : *** the integrated plumbing system is installed, the upright members of the frame are arranged substantially perpendicular to the floor. The cross-members are arranged to extend substantially perpendicularly between the upright members.
* .. 25 S. S The frame may be formed from MDF, preferably moisture resistant MDF. The frame may also or alternatively be formed from a conventional metal framework assembly including metal struts and crossbars. I. S * S. * SS
The frame may be installed by mounting it within a cavity wall space or against a wall.
When the frame is mounted within a cavity wall space it is preferably arranged or retrofitted such that it is flush with the front surface of the partition walls, e.g. plasterboard.
The frame may be mounted with respect to and secured to a sub-frame. The sub-frame may be arranged within the cavity wall space such that it is mounted to the partition walls or incorporated as part of the partition wall structure. The sub-frame may be mounted to or incorporated as part of a wall. Alternatively, the frame may be arranged within a cavity wall space and secured directly to the partition wall structure or it may be secured directly to a wall surface.
The frame may be secured to the sub-frame, partition wall structure or wall surface using conventional securing means such as screws, bolts, clips etc. The integrated plumbing system is pre-plumbed, i.e. the plumbing means for transferring water to the sanitary ware module and transferring sewage from the sanitary ware module are pre-fitted and pretested prior to the installation of the integrated plumbing system. The plumbing means are pre-fitted by arranging, interconnecting and securing the appropriate piping and valves etc. to the frame, preferably the rear side of the frame.
The plumbing means are secured to the frame using securing means such as pipe brackets or other suitable securing means. The plumbing means are preferably pre-fitted and tested for leaks in the factory prior to delivering the frame on site. The plumbing means are preferably insulated. The plumbing means may also be labelled in order to indicate which pipes should be connected to which services. The insulation andlor labels may be applied in the factory.
The first stage of installing the integrated plumbing system involves the mounting of the : , frame and connection of the plumbing means to the services. The frame may be mounted simply, quickly and easily by any suitably trained person. For example, the frame may be mounted by a wall-partitioning specialist. The plumbing means are 25 preferably connected to the supply pipes and waste system by a plumbing specialist.
Once the plumbing means are connected, the plumbing specialist is then able to test the service system. By pre-fitting and pre-testing the plumbing means, the plumbing means can be connected to the service pipes after mounting the frame within a cavity space or against a wall. Hence, the sanitary unit module need not be mounted to the frame during the first installation stage. Furthermore, the sanitary ware module need not be mounted to the frame until at least a substantial part of the construction work has been completed, the services have been tested and the system is required for use. The sanitary ware module may even be mounted after the interior of the site has been decorated, carpeted and possibly furnished.
The plumbing means includes a cold-water feed pipe for transferring cold water from the cold-water service or supply pipe to the sanitary ware module. Depending on the sanitary ware, the plumbing means may further include a hot-water feed pipe for transferring hot water from the hotwater service or supply pipe to the sanitary ware module. The hot-water feed pipe and cold-water feed pipe are preferably fitted with a conventional thermostatic mixing valve for regulating the flow and temperature of the hot water. If the building includes a circulating hot water supply system, then the plumbing means may further include a hotwater return pipe for transferring hot water back to the hot water supply in order to ensure the hot water does not stand in the feed pipes and cool. The hot-water return pipe is preferably fitted with a temperature controlled return valve.
The feed pipes preferably comprise standard 15mm copper piping.
The plumbing means also include a waste pipe for transferring sewage from the sanitary ware module to the sewage system. The waste pipe preferably comprises standard waste piping in accordance with the sanitary ware.
The cold-water feed pipe, optional hot-water feed pipe and hot-water return pipe are connected to the service supply pipes using conventional pipe-interconnecting means and methods. The cold-water feed pipe and optional hot-water feed pipe are connected : ,.** to one or more water inlets of the sanitary ware module. The cold- water feed pipe and optional hot-water feed pipe are connected to the inlets using connecting means such as a flexible hose or rigid piping. The waste pipe is connected to the sewage system using conventional pipe- interconnecting means and methods. The waste pipe is connected to a sewage outlet of the sanitary ware module. The waste pipe may also be connected to the outlet using connecting means such as a flexible connector. I. S * S. * S.
Figures 1 to 8 relate to a particular embodiment of the invention wherein the integrated plumbing system comprises a washbasin and mixer tap. Figure 1 depicts the plumbing means for transferring hot and cold water to the mixer tap. In this particular embodiment, the plumbing means for transferring water from the water supply pipes to the taps (3A) comprise a cold-water feed pipe (5), a hot-water feed pipe (6), a thermostatic mixing valve (7), a hot-water return pipe (8) and a temperature controlled return valve (9). The cold-water feed pipe is connected to the cold-water inlet of the sanitary ware module (not shown) by a flexible hose pipe (5A). The hot-water feed pipe is connected to the hot- water inlet of the sanitary ware inlet by a flexible hose pipe (6A).
Figures 2 and 3 respectively depict a rear and front view of the frame (2) . The frame comprises a front side (2A) and a rear side (28). The Figures illustrate how the plumbing means for transferring water (3A) are mounted to the rear side (2B) of a frame (2). The frame in this particular embodiment is formed from moisture resistant MOF.
Figure 4 depicts the frame (2), with pre-fitted plumbing means for transferring water (3A) and plumbing means for transferring waste (3B), being mounted in a sub-frame (10).
The plumbing means for transferring water from the water supply (3A) have been lagged. The plumbing means for transferring sewage from the washbasin (3B) are mounted to the rear side (IB) of the frame and comprise a waste pipe (11) for transferring sewage from the washbasin to the sewage system.
Figure 5 depicts the frame (1) of Figure 4 mounted and secured to the subframe (10).
The sanitary ware module may comprise sanitary ware such as a toilet, urinal, bidet, washbasin assembly, sink assembly, shower assembly or any other suitable sanitary ware items. The sanitary ware may comprise a number of component parts. For example, a toilet comprises a cistern with a water inlet and bowl with a sewage outlet, a washbasin assembly comprises taps with a cold-water inlet and hot water inlet and a washbasin with a sewage outlet and a trap. Likewise, a sink assembly comprises taps :.:::. with a cold-water inlet and hot-water inlet and a sink with a sewage outlet and trap. The sanitary ware may be designed and configured according to use. For example, the washbasins may be suitable for domestic, patient or surgical use. The sink may be S...
: suitable for domestic, public or commercial use. The taps may be conventional separate hot and cold taps or a mixer tap.
The integrated plumbing system according to the present invention may comprise one or .: more sanitary ware modules. Likewise, the sanitary ware module may comprise one or more sanitary ware items.
The sanitary ware module further comprises a facia panel such that the module may be mounted to the frame. The sanitary ware is pre-fitted to the facia panel prior to securing the facia panel to the frame. The sanitary ware is pre-fitted by arranging, interconnecting the component parts and securing them to the facia panel. The sanitary ware is preferably factory fitted and also tested. The sanitary ware is secured to the facia panel using conventional securing means and methods. Certain components parts of the sanitary ware may be mounted and secured to the rear side of the facia panel such that they are concealed, and subsequently tamper-proof, when the sanitary ware module is mounted to the frame. For example, the cistern of a toilet may be arranged and secured to the rear side of the facia panel such that only the bowl is visible. Likewise, the trap of a washbasin assembly may be mounted behind the facia panel such that it is concealed.
The sewage outlet and water inlets of the sanitary ware are mounted and arranged such that they are connectable to the plumbing means on the rear side of the facia panel.
The facia panel of the sanitary ware module may encase and screen the entire frame when mounted. However, the facia panel may only conceal a part of the frame and thus the integrated plumbing system may comprise one or more further facia panels to hide the frame from view. The facia panels may be designed, configured and assembled to provide a box-type facia unit having at least a front and side portions. The facia panels may be designed, configured and assembled to provide a vanity-type unit having at least a front, top and side portions. The integrated plumbing system may include a vanity unit formed from a plurality of facia panels, wherein the facia panel of the sanitary ware module forms an upper or top portion of a vanity unit. A plurality of facia panels may be designed, configured and assembled to provide a cubicle suitable for housing a toilet etc. When a plurality of integrated plumbing systems are mounted along a wall, facia panels may be mounted to seal the gap between the individual systems. * ** * * I
* 25 During the second stage of installing the integrated plumbing system, the facia panel of the sanitary ware module is secured to the frame, the plumbing means are connected to **** : the inlet(s) and outlet of the sanitary ware module and, if the frame is not completely concealed, then one or more further facia panels are optionally mounted to the frame.
The second stage may be completed easily, quickly and does not require specialist plumbing knowledge. Thus, a non-plumbing specialist may complete the second stage.
*.: Hence, the plumbing specialist is only required for the first stage and so the number of site visits and consequential costs involved are reduced. Significantly, the sanitary ware module and optional further facia panels need not be delivered to the site and fitted until the construction phase of the internal structure has been completed or until the integrated plumbing systems are ready for commissioning. Hence, the risk of breaking, damaging or losing the sanitary items is greatly reduced.
The facia panels are removeably mounted to the frame such that they can be easily removed. Hence, plumbing means and/or sanitary ware may be easily and quickly tested, commissioned, repaired or replaced. The facia panels are mounted to the frame using releasable securing means such as screws or interlocking clips.
It is essential that the facia panels are water resistant. Thus, the facia panels may be manufactured from melamine-faced chipboard or laminated chipboard. The edges of the facia panels may be rolled, chamfered or lipped such that it may engage with an adjacent panel or flat such that it may abut a corresponding flat edge of an adjacent panel.
Figure 6 depicts a sanitary ware module (4) comprising a washbasin (12) and mixer tap (13) mounted to the frame of Figures 2 to 5 via a facia panel (14). It is clear that the facia panel does not entirely conceal the frame since the plumbing means for transferring water from the water supply to the mixer tap are still visible.
Figure 7 depicts a further facia panel (15) mounted to the frame below the sanitary ware module (4) and a further facia panel (16) being mounted to the frame above the sanitary water module such that the frame is completely hidden.

*...., 25 One or more mirrors, soap dispenser, soap holder, toilet tissue dispenser, toilet tissue S...
holder etc may be further mounted to the facia panel of the sanitary ware module or *:::: further facia panels. These items are commonly known as sanitary ware accessories. S..
S
All the necessary tooling required to mount the frame, connecting the plumbing means .: 30 to the services and sanitary ware module and mount the facia panels may be provided as part of the integrated plumbing system. The tooling may be disposable tooling.
The size of the frame is preferably standardised such that the facia panels of the integrated plumbing system may be also standardised. As a result, the manufacture, installation and repair of the integrated plumbing system is simpler, quicker and cheaper.
The integrated plumbing system is suitable for commercial, public, private, domestic or healthcare purposes. The integrated plumbing system is suitable for kitchen or washroom environments. The integrated plumbing system is suitable for use in schools, hospitals, motorway service stations, offices, restaurants, houses etc. One of more integrated plumbing systems may be mounted along one or more walls in a room to provide a modular washroom environment.
As mentioned above, the integrated plumbing system is installed in two stages. During the first stage the frame is mounted within the wall cavity space or to a wall and the pre- fitted plumbing means, secured to the rear side of the frame, are connected to the water service pipes and sewage system (see Figure 4). During the second stage, the sanitary ware module is mounted to the frame, the plumbing means are connected to the water inlet(s) and sewage outlet of the sanitary ware module and further facia panels are optionally mounted to the frame (see Figure 7).
The first stage occurs during the construction phase of the site. Whereas the second stage need not occur until the internal structure of the site has been at least substantially completed. Hence, only the frame with the pre-fitted plumbing means and optional tools for completing the first stage are delivered to the site during the construction phase.
Thus, the sanitary ware module, optional further facia panels and tools for completing the second stage need only be delivered to the site as and when the integrated plumbing systems are required for commissioning.
: ,** The frame with the pre-fitted plumbing means is preferably delivered to the site in a e..
complete first fix package. The package has no loose parts and it is easy to handle or transport. The package is preferably transported on a returnable transport jig such that no packaging is required. Likewise, the sanitary ware module is preferably delivered to the site in a complete second fix package. Again, the package has no loose parts and it is easy to handle or transport. The package is also preferably transported on the returnable transport jig such that no packaging is required.
As explained, the first stage may be completed easily and quickly. Significantly, the first stage may be completed without having to secure the sanitary ware to the frame. Thus, the plumbing means can be connected to the water supply and the sewage system and the services may then be tested, and repaired if required, without having to fit the sanitary ware. The second stage may also be completed easily and quickly. Notably, the second stage may be completed by a non-plumbing specialist. Furthermore, the non- plumbing specialist may test the connections between the plumbing means and inlet/outlets by simply checking for leaks and then tightening the connecting means and/or applying a sealant if required.
