242,987. Siemens - Schuckertwerke Ges. Nov. 11, 1924, [Convention date]. Joints with packing operated by fluid pressure; hinge and swivelling joints.-Relates to couplings for pipes laid in a flexible manner of the type wherein the axial movement of the ends of the pipes to be coupled together which takes place when the piping is exposed to pressure is utilized for compressing a packing body. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a packing-ring 4 is positioned against a flange 12 on the pipe 2 by a cap 5 which is secured to the end of the pipe 1 by bayonet catches 6, and when the piping is exposed to pressure the pipe ends 1, 2 will tend to separate and compress the packing 4 so that it assumes the form and position shown in dotted lines. By a suitably compact construction the packing-ring could be compressed somewhat during the coupling when the pressure is non-existent. Alternatively, each pipe end is provided with a flange 12 and a packing-ring 4, the whole joint being enclosed and adjusted by an external sleeve. In Fig. 3 the invention is applied to swivelling pipes 1, 2, the packing ring 4 being held in place by a ring 5 which co-operates with turned-over projections 6 on the end of the pipe 1 to form a bayonet joint. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes an alleged modification wherein a hose-like packing 34, Fig. 4 (Cancelled), overlaps the pipe ends 1, 2 and is surrounded by a netting 35 which is connected to rings 26 secured to the pipe ends by bayonet pins 6. When the piping is exposed to pressure, the two ends will separate and thus reduce the cross-section of the netting, which will consequently press the packing 34 against the pipe ends. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
