Abstract

A lifting apparatus consists of two identical mobile frames 1 supported on wheels or castors 2. Each frame 1 has a lifting arm 5 pivotally mounted at its centre, each arm 5 carrying at its free ends a spigot 6 to engage a mounting tube on a head or foot panel of a bed. In use, each mobile frame 1 is brought into position against the respective ends of the bed to be lifted. The arms 5 are lowered in their horizontal position to engage with the bed ends and locked in place. The lifting arms 5 are then raised by actuators 7 on each frame 1 controlled by a controller (not shown) . The lifting arms 5 can be rotated to the vertical position to allow access to the underside of the bed. The bed can be raised or lowered to perform operations such as servicing and cleaning or transported.

Description

LIFTING APPARATUS
The present invention relates to a lifting apparatus for beds or similar apparatus, in particular lifting hospital beds for cleaning, servicing or transport.
Hospital personnel are often required to lift hospital beds in order to clean or carry out other services. This servicing or cleaning may require the bed to be rotated to its side in order to be able to reach the underside of the bed. Additionally, the bed may be required to be rotated to its side so that the bed is narrowed in width to enable the bed to be moved through narrow doorways. This lifting work is likely to cause undue strain on the hospital personnel concerned.
The present invention seeks to make improvements.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a lifting apparatus for handling beds or similar item, the apparatus comprising a pair of mobile frames, each mobile frame having a centrally pivotally mounted lifting arm, the lifting arm pivotable between a horizontal orientation and a vertical orientation, means for raising and lowering the lifting arm with respect to the frame, the lifting arm having means mounted on its free ends for engagement with a head or foot end of the item to be lifted, one of the frames engaging one end of the item and the other frame engaging the opposite end of the item, control means to raise or lower the arms on both of the frames to raise or lower the item or pivot the arms td rotate the bd or similar on its side.
Therefore the mobile frames engage the head and foot ends of the bed or similar item and can raise or lower the item as required and further can rotate the item to any vertical angle for cleaning the underside or for servicing or for transport of the item through narrow doorways.
Preferably, the lifting arms are of adjustable length to accommodate varying widths of beds or similar items.
Preferably, the lifting arm can be locked in a vertical orientation so that the mobile frames can be stowed away, the lifting apparatus being readily movable.
The invention will now be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Figure 1 is a schematic view one of the mobile frames of the lifting apparatus with the lifting arm in the horizontal orientation; Figure 2 is a schematic view one of the mobile frames of the lifting apparatus with the lifting arm in the vertical orientation; and Figure 3 is perspective view which shows the lifting apparatus supporting a hospital bed allowing the underside of the bed to be reached for cleaning, servicing or repair purposes.
Referring to the Figures, the lifting apparatus consists of two identical mobile frames 1 supported on wheels or castors 2. Each frame 1 has a lifting arm 5 pivotally mounted at its centre to the frame. Each lifting arm 5 carries at its free ends a spigot 6 to engage a mounting tube on a head or foot panel of a bed to be lifted. A sliding clamp locks the lifting arm 5 beneath the bed's roller buffer tube and is held into position by a spring bolt or any conventional means.
In use, each mobile frame 1 is brought into position against the respective end of the bed. The arms 5 are lowered in their horizontal position to engage with the bed ends and locked in place.
The lifting arms 5 are then raised by means of a battery operated actuator 7 on each frame 1. Both actuators 7 on the two frames 1 are controlled by a controller (not shown). The lifting arms 5 can be rotated to the vertical position as shown in Figure 2 to allow access to the underside of the bed by the frames 1 with the arms 5 in the horizontal position, and when raised, rotation of the arms 5 to the vertical position allows the bed to be rotated on its side to allow the underside to be serviced or cleaned. As shown in figure 3, the bed can then also be transported safely to its destination in this position by means of the castors 2.
If required, the lifting arms 5 can be inserted beneath a mattress on the bed, when it is not necessary to remove the mattress, and the mattress can be held secured in place by means of a resilient or elastic strap when lifting the bed. The ability to adjust the width of the lifting arms 5 enables the lifting apparatus to accommodate different bed sizes.
When not in use, the lifting arm 5 is locked in its vertical state against the frame by abutment 9 for compactness and the frame 1 stowed away (see figure 2) The apparatus does not use any external power supply leads or cables.
