Thermionic amplifiers; amplifying circuits employing lowpressure apparatus. - A rectifying device 7 is arranged in the plate circuit of a thermionic valve 1 which is non-conducting until the applied potential exceeds a predetermined value and a resistance 14 is connected in parallel and so arranged that the voltage drop across it is insufficient to break down the rectifier until signalling potentials are applied to the valve 1. An electroresponsive device, such as relay 9, may be arranged in series with the rectifier and be operated by the current passed when the latter breaks down. The rectifying device may comprise two dis-similar electrodes enclosed in a receptacle filled with a gas such as neon at a definite pressure. The valve 1 may be supplied with alternating current and the transformer 6 may in addition supply the grid biasing potential which may be regulated by resistance 19.
