Abstract

242,510. Steiner, J. C. March 17, 1925. Guards.-In a food-chopping machine having a device for feeding the material to the chopping- mechanism, a guard is provided which is moved to a position to screen the chopping-mechanism when the feeding-device is in the inoperative position and is removed from the chopping- mechanism when the feeding-device is in use. As shown in Fig. 1, the worm casing B is sur. mounted by a hopper C having a feeding-plunger P operated by a lever M. Rods 2 project through the hopper wall and are slidably arranged to screen or uncover the forcing-worm E. The plunger P is pivotally suspended from a projection N of the lever M, which is carried by a bracket K on the hopper and has an extension 11 with a cam slot 12. The rods 2 are connected by a cross-member 4 having a groove 5 which is engaged by the end 10 of a lever 7, pivoted at 6 and forced to embrace the extension 11 and provided with a pin 8 carrying a roller which engages the slot 12. Displacement of the plunger P, which would allow the operator to put his fingers into the neck of the hopper, is prevented by a link 13 pivoted at one end to the bracket K and provided at the other end with a slot 14 which engages a pin 15 on the extension P<1> of the plunger. The cam slot 12 is provided with two dwells 12a, 12<d> which suitably synchronize the plunger P and bars 2.
