Abstract

An apparatus for combating ground heave in the construction of foundations, comprising a sheet of low density material, such as polystyrene, which is pinned to a foundation trench wall, the low density sheet having additional overlapping sheets of polythene bonded to one side. The polythene sheet is creased at a specific distance from the edge of the low density sheet so as to assist with the correct placement and securement of the low density material within the trench. The polythene sheeting also overlaps adjoining low density sheets to seal any gaps with the securing pins passing through the polythene sheet, the adjoining low density sheet and into the trench wall. The apparatus allows the accurate placement of the low density sheets without the need for an operative to enter the excavation.

Description

Safety Fix Heave Precaution.
Foundations dug to depth below 1500 mm in clay ground, due to the influence of trees, require some method of heave precaution. This is usually a low-density material or void former that allows the ground to "swell" without damage to the foundations.
However the problem is fixing this material in place. Health and Safety law regulates against the entry of operatives into deep excavations without some form of protection.
This product can be installed without operatives entering the foundation and is more secure during pouring of the concrete.
Safety Fix has two pieces of polythene bonded to its face. The polythene is pre creased at a point that allows the end of the polythene sheet to lie in the bottom of the trench. The sheet closest to the heave precaution lies against the face of the excavation. Then the top of the heave precaution is the pinned to the trench using plastic spikes. Adjacent sheets are fixed by lapping the horizontal joint with the attached polythene sheet.
As the concrete is poured into the foundation the polythene is trapped and therefore holds the heave precautions in place.
Advantages over present systems.
Operatives are not required to enter the excavation in order to fix the product.
The product is more securely fixed with less chance of it being displaced by the concrete.
The horizontal laps ensure that there are no gaps to the heave precautions and a continuous protection is provided to the complete face of the foundation.

Claims (1)

  1. Claims Using this type of heave precaution would alleviate the need to
send operative into a foundation excavation and would enable operative to comply with current Health and Safety legislation Using this type of heave precaution it would be impossible for the heave precautions to move during pouring of a deep trench fill foundation and compromise the foundation structurally Using this type of heave precaution allows the material to be installed more accurately.
