Abstract

A process for the manufacture of a reinforced concrete article i.e. cladding for buildings comprises the steps of applying a coating of a concrete surface retardant to the surface of a mould, filling the mould with a reinforced cementitious composition, allowing the composition to cure to form the article and removing the article from the mould. The reinforcement may be glass fibre and an optional mould release agent may be used wherein the retarder and release agent are applied by spraying or brushing.

Description

PROCESS FOR MANUFACTURE OF REINFORCED CONCRETE ARTICLES This invention relates to a process for manufacture of glass fibre reinforced cement, particularly but not exclusively for manufacture of glass fibre reinforced cement articles which have a surface resembling traditional stone. Articles in accordance with the present invention may be used for building construction, particularly for cladding for buildings, girders or other structural components. Previously articles have been moulded from glass reinforced cement but the resultant surfaces have either been smooth or have a plain texture. Neither of these surfaces are satisfactory as superficial imperfections are readily apparent. Furthermore these surfaces do not have the appearance of traditional stone. Sandblasting of the articles has been used to obtain a gritty, stone-like finish, this process is messy, time consuming and necessitates double handling of the articles. Washing of the articles with acid has also been carried out. While this does result in an acceptably stone-like finish, use of acid has numerous disadvantages. An inconsistent appearance or finish can be obtained resulting in a need for remedial treatment. Double handling is required. Protective clothing must be worn and the spent acid and washings must be disposed of. This presents an environmental difficulty. According to the present invention a process for manufacture of a reinforced concrete article comprises of the steps of: optionally applying a coating of a release agent to a surface of a mould, applying a coating of a concrete surface retardant to the surface of the mould, filling the mould with a reinforced cementitious composition, allowing the composition to cure to form an article, and removing the article from the mould. The cementitious composition is preferably a glass fibre reinforced composition. Washing with acid or sandblasting is not required in order to obtain a stone-like appearance. The retardant may be a conventional surface retarder for concrete such as may be used for producing a light etch on exposed aggregate surfaces. Although such retarders are known for application to cured aggregate surfaces, the use in application to surfaces of a mould prior to moulding, has not been previously disclosed. The retardant is preferably diluted with a solvent prior to use. A preferred retardant is PRECO MINICOTE supplied by Pepcon Limited. A preferred solvent is PRECO SOLVALL, supplied by Pepcon Limited. In preferred processes the diluted mixture contains about 30-10%, preferably about 30-20%, more preferably about 25% of retardant. The specification percentages and other proportions are by weight unless indicated otherwise. Proportions and percentages are selected to total 100%. Preferred cementitious compositions contain generally equal weights of sand and cement. The cementitious material may be applied in layers to the internal surfaces of the mould in conventional manner. The cured article may be washed with water after removal from the mould. Treatment with acid is not required. Use of a release agent is optional. A preferred release agent is RECKLI-Mould-Wax supplied by RECKLI-Chemiewerkstoff GmbH. The retarder and release agent, if used, may be applied to the surface of the mould by spraying. Brushing may also be employed. Each coating is allowed to dry before application of a subsequent coating. More than one coating of each material may be employed. The invention is further described by means of example but not in any limitative sense. Examples Internal faces of a conventional fibreglass or rubber mould were coated with PRECO mould release QD release agent and the surfaces were allowed to dry. A mixture containing PRECO-MINICOTE, 25% and PRECO-SOLVALL 75% was applied to the internal surfaces of the mould. The coating was allowed to dry. A cementitous composition was prepared comprising: Chelford 40 Sand 18kg White Snowcrete (Blue Circle) 16kg Cemfil Alkali Resistant Fibre 500g Purified Water 51 Polymer 400g An optional pigment may be used. The ingredients were mixed in a conventional manner. A first coating of the composition not containing any fibres was sprayed on to the internal surface of the mould to a thickness of 3mm. A second coating of the composition containing fibres was applied to a thickness of 6mm and the surface was hand finished. The coating was repeated to provide a third and final coat. Strengthening ribs were added as necessary dependent on the geometry or intended use of the article. The article was left to dry and cure for 12 to 16 hours. The cured article was removed from the mould and washed with water followed by gentle brushing. The article was then set aside to dry. The article may comprise a cladding component for a building, girder or other structural component.
