Abstract
241,897. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Ipsen, C. L.). Oct. 23, 1924, [Convention date]. Grid resistances; ribbon resistances mounted on frames.-An electric furnace comprises a heating chamber lined with refractory material and a resistance consisting- of spaced convolutions mounted within the chamber in spaced relation to all heat-insulating parts thereof. The resistance may consist of a cast grid or a nickelchrome ribbon 19 bent into zig-zag formation and supported by metal loops 23 embracing bars 22 of aluminium oxide secured to the furnace walls by pins 25 and spaced therefrom by insulating washers 29. A second insulating bar 31 is freely suspended by metal loops from the lower ends of the convolutions of the resistance. The insulating bars are provided with spaced grooves 24, 32 engaged by the metal loops so that the pitch of the convolutions may be varied. The bar 22 may be made in short lengths. The furnace has resistances as described above mounted on two opposite walls.
