241,539. Accounting & Tabulating Machine Corporation, (Assignees of Powers, J.). Oct. 16, 1924, [Convention date]. Statistical machines; printing totals. - In a " grouped-card " machine wherein total-taking is effected by means which detect the absence of a card at the end of a group run, each group is stacked in the magazine at right-angles to the preceding group, the magazine being oscillated 90 between each group-feed, all groups except that being fed being held from the feeding means until, after total-taking, the magazine is oscillated to freeone more group. The sensing pins 15 in the reciprocating pin-box 14, Figs. 12 and 14, in reading a card 17 pass through holes 16, 18 in fixed plates 13, 12 and raise pins 19 guided in a fixed plate 20. These pins 19 in turn raise rods 21 actuating the adding mechanism. The cards are fed to the rollers 22 by a picker block 26, Figs. 5 and 7, reciprocated by a cam-operated lever 28, and carrying rigid therewith a picker blade 31 and a card plate 32 having rear and forward extensions 33 and 34, the block 26 having guide members 27 moving in channels 24 in a frame 23 which carries a card-guide frame 38, Fig. 3. The front of this frame 38 is adjustable at 40 to form the card gate 41 in conjunction with a throat block 25 on the frame 23. Above the frame 38 is pivoted at 45 a base-plate 43 positioned at the other end by a spring-held bolt 50. This arrangement renders the picker mechanism easily accessible. A gear plate 60 meshing with a gear 230 on a shaft 228, Figs. 2 and 3, is rotatably disposed in an annular groove 61 of the magazine base 43 and on bearing ribs 62 of said base and is provided with a cross-shaped opening 63, the two parts of which register in turn with the. cardshaped opening 56 of the base when the plate 60 is in one or other of two positions at ight-angles, determined by lugs 66 and a stop 65 fast with the base-plate 43. Vertical guides 68 on the plate 60 have two bevelled corners 71 to coact with the cards 17, Fig. 4, to prevent cards being placed in the magazine upside down or backwards. The lowest or first card group drops through the opening 56 into the guide frame 38 and the cards are fed by the picker plate 32, the cards of the second group and those above being supported by the ribs 62. At the end of the first group the absence of a card at the pin-box is detected, adding is completed, total-taking is effected and subsequently the plate 0 is automatically rotated 90 so that the second group drops to the plate 32, the third group and above being now supported on the ribs 2. The card being fed is held to the plate 32 by means of a suction pump, pipes 79, 81 and orifices 80, 82, Figs. 5 and 7. Supported in a bracket 86 on the frame 23 and in front of the picker blade 32, Figs. 2, 5, and 7, is a special card-feeler 85 having a recess at 88, Fig. 10, and a flat head 89. A spring 90 is strong enough to raise the feeler 85 normally and weak enough to be depressed when the card on the plate 32 rests on the head 89. When there is a card on this head a pair of levers 93 fulcrummed at 94 on the picker plate 32 pivot about the edge of the feeler 85 and project rods 97. If, however, no card is present, the ends of the levers 93 enter the recess 88 and the rods 97 remain stationary. Disabling the reading device. A shaft' 100, Figs. 12 and 14, rocked by a lever 101, roller 105, and cam 108, has loose thereon two sleeves 110 each of which carries a lever 111 rocked by one of the rods 97 against the spring 112 and an arm 115 having a lateral flange 116 which coacts with a spring-depressed dog 118 pivoted to an arm 119 fast on the shaft 100. When a card is fed by the picker plate 32 the rods 97 are projected, arms 111, 115 are rocked and the two dogs 118 fall, these parts being restored as the picker plate is retracted. A shaft 123, Figs. 9, 14, and 18, carries an arm 124 notched at 125 to coact with a tooth 126 on the dog 118 and also carries a second arm 128 linked to a retaining plate 130 between the pin-plates 12, 13. Normally the arm 124 and plate 130 are in the position shown in Fig. 14 and holes in the plate 130 align with the holes in the pin-plates. At the end of a group, however, when no card is on the plate 32 and the head 89, Fig. 10, the rods 97 enter the recess 88 and are not' projected, arms 111 and 115 remain under the dog, 118, which remains engaged with arm 124 and on rocking of the shaft 100, shaft 123 is rocked and the plate 130 is shifted to prevent rising of the pins 15. Thus the analyzer is disabled without stopping the reciprocation of the pin-box. Total-initiating mechanism. At total-taking a third arm 150 fast on the shaft 123, Fig. 18, lowers a cam arm 157 through teeth 148, 149, bell-crank 147, 155 and link 156, and releases a clutch bolt 167. This bolt is housed in a crank 165, Fig. 9, fast on the total-initiating shaft 163 and when the head 168 is released by the lever 157 the bolt is spring-pressed t'o the right and engages one of two lugs 177 on a disc 176 rigid with a sleeve 173 geared at 174, 175 in the ratio 1 : 2 to the main shaft 30. At the end of the revolution of the shaft 163 the bolt 167 is reengaged by the cam lever 157 and withdrawn. A cam 184 on the shaft 163 operates links 182, 185, 186, Fig. 12, and arm 187 pivoted to a camoperated bell crank 189, and carrying a lug 195. When this bell-crank is cam-actuated to trip the lever 187 and move it longitudinally this lug 195 coacts with a pin 199 upon an arm 198 fast with an arm 200 and operates links 201, 202 to rotate the total shaft 203 of the adding mechanism. The arm 200 is held depressed during total-taking by an arm 205 rigid therewith which is latched down by a member 206 which is tripped later by a cam member 208. At the end of total-taking camoperated gearing is actuated to rotate the shaft 228, Figs. 2 and 3, and rock the magazine plate 60 through 90 so that feeding of the next card group then commences. Specifications 26896/13, 22359/14, and 102,150 are referred to.
