TOTAL-TAKING 'MEANS FOR ACCOUNTING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
I Patented May 3, 1921.
Applicationffiled February 28, 1916. Serial No. 80,793.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM WV. LASKER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Total-Taking Means for. Accounting-Machines, of which the following is a specification,
This invention relates to accounting machines in general, and more especially to the total-taking means of accounting machines.
Among the main objects of the present invention, it is aimed to provide an improved anchoring means for the total-taking mechanism such as used in the copending application of James Powers, Ser. No. 60,629. filed Nov. 10, 1915.
Vith the present invention, such anchor- .ing means are entirely removed from the total-taking shaft, and disposed adjacent to the main driving shaft, thus freeing the machine of an encumbrance where space is in demand, and disposing such mechanism where plenty of space is at hand.
The invention further provides a simplified construction whereby the total-taking mechanism ispositively anchored in position for taking a total and contemplating a minimum of co-acting elements.
The invention still further contemplates the provision of improved means for actuating the total-taking shaft into total taking position.
These and other features, capabilities and advantages of the present invention will appear from the subjoined detail description of one specific embodiment thereof, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of-a machine equipped with the present improvement.
Fig. 2 is a fragmental side elevational view of the anchoring mechanism, partly in section, showing the relative parts in an choring position.
Fig. 3 is a fragmental end elevational view of the mechanism illustrated in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a fragmental side elevational view of the anchoring mechanism, partly in section, showing the relativeparts in released position.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the anchoring mechanism shown in Fig. 2.
' Fig.6 is an enlarged detached view of tion 31 of the reciprocating f The bar 32 is pivotally mounted on the up- I a casting forming part of the anchoring mechanism.
In the embodimentshown, there is provided a tabulating machine-having a main frame A, and a card receptacle 11 from which the cards to be analyzed are fed by means of the feed'rollers 12 to the position defined by the stop plate 13 between the plates 14 and 15 where the cards are analyzed by suitable pins (not shown) which set the setting pins 16, by means of which the position of the type-carrying segments disposed in the housing 17, when actuated. may be determined. segments cotiperate with the accumulator wheels 18 whereby such accumulator wheels 18 accumulate the several items and. then, upon the actuation of the total-taking shaft 19, such wheels 18, by the interposition of the connection 20 will be set to define the position of such type carrying segments when actuated.
The means for actuating the total-taking shaft and for anchoring the same in position. which form the main part of the present invention, will now be described.
Disposed below in which the analyzing pins (not shown) are disposed, is the pin box 21, which is connected bysuitable actuating means mounted on the shaft 22 for vertically reciprocating such pin box. In such pin box 21 is disposed the initiating pin 23 which has a collar 24 disposed abovethe-lower plate 25 of the pin box, lower 'plate25- is strained a spring 26, by means of which the initiating pin, will normally remain in raised position. upper end of the pin 23 there is provided a collar 27 of slightly less openings 28 and 29 "formed in the plates 14 and 15 respectively, such collar 27 being provided to cooperate with the openings 28 and 29 of the plates 14 and 15. The lower 'Such type- carryingthe plates 14 and 15 and.
diameter than the Near the end of the :pin 23 is provided with an elongated slot 30 through which the rod porwardly extendingarm 33 of the crank lever 34 which is fulcrumed at its shaft 35 mounted in the bearing (not shown) secured to the mainframe A. The crank lever 34 also has a laterally extending arm 36, the free end of which is provided with angle to the stub bar 32 extends.
a cam roller 37 to engage the cam groove f 38 of the cam 39 mounted on the shaft 22.
Adjacent to the cam 39 there is provided a shaft 40 secured tothe main frame A on which is loosely mounted the casting 41 (Fig. 6) which has an upwardly extending arm 42 provided with a lateral stop 43 thereon to, coiiperate with the .lateral stop 44 formed on'the rearwardly extendingend of the reciprocating bar 32. The casting 41 7 also has a laterally extending arm 45 pro-- vided with an anchoring stop 46, and a link connecting arm 47 to the free end of which is pivotally connected the link 48, the upper end of which link :48 is pivotally connected to the laterally extending arm 49 fixed on thetotal-taking shaft 19. 'Fixedto the shaft '40 is the bearing bracket 50 extending laterally and downwardl therefrom, to the free end of which is plvotally connected the latching lever 51 having a latching hook portion 52 at its u per end and a pin 53 extending laterally rom its downwardly extending arm 54. The hook portion 52 is resiliently strained toward the stop 46 of the casting 41 by means of the spring 55 connected between its upwardly extending portion and the bracket 50.
The periphery of the cam 39 is provided ,with a cut-out lug 56 for cooperating with the pin 53 of the latching lever 51;
The operation of the arrangement is sub- I stantially as follows :-The cards to be analyzed for taking a, record have no perfo-.
rations in alinement with the openings 28 and 29. Sto cards are provided with perforations in a inement wlth the openings 28 4 and 29 and of suflicient size to permit the passage'therethrough of the collar 24, and total-taln'ng cards are provided, as shown, in Fig. 2, b the card C with perforations just su cient y large to permit-the assage therethrough of the upper-end of t e pin 23 but obstruct the upward passage of the collar 24. By this arrangement, whenever a record card is passed through the machine, the pin 23 will be obstructed in its upward movement by its upper end coming into eontabt with the card itself and thereby the stop 44,
'44 below the stop relative to the stop 43, will .be so positioned that upon the actuation of the reclprocating "bar 32, by'the operation of the crank lever 34, the casting 41 will not be actuated and consequently the total-taking shaft 19will 4 be unaffected in its operation. On the other hand, when a stop card passes through the machine,'or the card supply is exhausted and no card is disposed between the plates 14 and 15, the free pamge of the collar 24 through the openlngs 28 and 29 will position the stop 43, and again, upon the actuatlon of the bar 32, by the operatihn' of the crank lever 34, the casting 41 will remain idle. I 9
However, when a total-taking card a automatically shifting operative for accumulating;
passed throu h the machine and the upward movement 0 the initiating pin 23 '1s obstructed by its collar 24 coming into contact with the total-taking card, the stop 44 will be disposed in the path of movement of the stop 43 so that, upon the actuation of the reciprocating bar 32 by the crank-lever 34, the casting 41 will be rocked thereby rocking its lower arm so that its stop 46 will be snapped-by the portion 52 'and furthermore rocking the total-taking shaft 19 by the connection of the lever 47, link 48, and lever 49.
This rocking of the shaft 19 will position the accumulator wheels 18 by the connection I 20 to set the type-carrying segments for taking a total. The oo-action of the latch 51 with the stop 46 will anchor the totaltaking shaft 19 in total-taking position until the lug 56" strikes the pin 53 therebyreleasing the hook portion 52 from the stop 46, and permitting the total-taking shaft to be returned to initial position by the s rings 57, which return of the shaft 19 will a so resaid mechanism and anchoring means for holding said mechanism and adapted for releasing the latter after said apparatus has taken the total. I
