Abstract

The process of the parent Specification for the activation and reactivation of the surface of metallic catalysts by electrolytic anodic oxidation and subsequent reduction is applied to the treatment of alloys of two or more metals, e.g. a nickel-copper alloy. The products, whose surface on reduction approximates in composition to that of the unoxidized alloy, are useful in the hydrogenation of oils and dehydrogenation of alcohols. A further modification of the process of the parent Specification consists in the reduction of the electrolytically-oxidized surface without previously removing the alkali metal salt employed as electrolyte. The product then consists of a metal together with a trace of the alkali metal salt which exercises a promoting effect when the catalyst is employed for the synthesis of ammonia or the manufacture of hydrogen. Salts of the rare alkali metals may be employed.
