Abstract
241,107. Marks, E. C. R., (Schneider et Cie.). April 7, 1925. Physical or molecular structure, altering by mechanical treatment.-Apparatus for controlling hooping effects in tubes such as those used for guns by measuring the high fluid pressures involved comprises a tube formed of metal having a high elastic limit and of relatively small diameter, the ends of which are fixed in the ends of a cylindrical casing, the deformation of the inner tube being transmitted through liquid contained in the annular space between the tubes to an indicating column of liquid. The tube A of high elasticity is mounted in the ends of a cylinder B. A pipe C conveying the high-pressure fluid opens into one of these ends and a pipe D, which may be closed by a plug if desired conveys the fluid away from the other end to a place for its utilization. An indicating tube E opens into the annular space b between the tube A and the cylinder, the space b and tube E containing indicating liquid. The quantity of liquid contained in the annular space b may be varied by moving an annular diaphragm F comprising rubber washers which may be squeezed together by the plates F<1>, F<2> when rods G, G are turned. The diaphragm may be moved as a whole by rotating a screwed sleeve I. The level of liquid in the tube e may be read against curves J plotted on a board which may be moved across the tube by screw K<1> according to a scale K corresponding with the adjustment of the diaphragm F. In applying the invention to the hooping of tubes, the tube to be treated is mounted at the ends and the pipe D communicates with one end. The board on which the indicator is mounted is also in this case provided with a series of tubes leading to little bellows devices contacting at different points along the length of the tube and containing indicating fluid. The deformation of the tube at these points is thus indicated and such devices may be combined with contact devices in electric circuit with lamps for giving a visible signal at certain predetermined deformation. In a modification, the tube A is butt-ended.
