Description

A PREPARATION FOR USE AGAINST
FLYING INSECTS THAT BITE
This invention relates to a preparation for use against flying insects that bite. The flying insects are typically midges, mosquitoes and other biting, blood-sucking insects.
Flying insects such for example as midges and mosquitoes cause much misery to animals and human beings. The flying insects tend to attack in summer and autumn months and their bites cause irritation such for example as itching and stinging. There are several known preparations for use against the flying insects but these known preparations are not sufficiently effective. For example, some of the known preparations concentrate simply on repelling attacks by the flying insects, while others of the known preparations concentrate simply on soothing and relieving pain from the bites.
It is an aim of the present invention to reduce the above mentioned problem.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided a preparation for use against flying insects that bite, which preparation comprises: i) benzyl benzoate; ii) diethyl toluamide; iii) zinc carbonate; iv) zinc oxide; v) allantoin; and vi) petrolatum.
The preparation of the present invention is advantageous in that it first of all acts to deter the flying insects from biting, and it secondly acts to alleviate irritation if the flying insects do actually bite. The preparation of the present invention is especially advantageous for use on animals such for example as horses and ponies, but it may be used on other animals that tend to suffer from attacks from the fly insects. The preparation may also advantageously be used on human beings.
The preparation of the present invention can advantageously include: vii) tea tree oil; and/or viii) peppermint oil.
Preferably, the preparation comprises: i) 1-35% benzyl benzoate; ii) 1 30% diethyl toluamide; iii) 0.5 - 25% zinc carbonate; iv) 0.5-40% zinc oxide; v) 0.1 - 5% allantoin; vi) 5 - 95% petrolatum; vii) 0.0 - 5% tea tree oil; and viii) 0.0 -10% peppermint oil.
As used herein, all percentages are by weight.
The preparation preferably comprises: i) 20.0% benzyl benzoate; ii) 5.0% diethyl toluamide; iii) 4.0% zinc carbonate; iv) 2.0% zinc oxide; v) 0.2% allantoin; vi) 63.4% petrolatum; vii) 0.2% tea tree oil; and viii) 0.2% peppermint oil, the balance to 100% being made up of at least one other ingredient.
The zinc carbonate in the preparation may be present as calamine.
Preferably, the preparation includes white oil. The white oil is an emollienVmoisturiser but its main function in the preparation of the invention is to control viscosity and to assist in ease of use.
The white oil is presently present in an amount of 5 - 95%.
In the above mentioned preferred formulation of the invention, the white oil is preferably present in an amount of 5%, in order to give a total of 1 00%.
The allantoin may be complemented or assisted by panthenol and/or biotin.
The tea tree oil and/or the peppermint oil may be complemented or assisted by one or more of aloe Vera, calendula, thymol, citronella, manuka honey, evening primrose oil, yarrow and neem oil.
The diethyl toluamide may be complemented or assisted by a pyrethroid The preparation of the present invention is preferably in the form of a cream, paste or salve. The preparation may be in other forms if desired, for
example as a liquid.
Reference will now be made to the following Examples.
EXAMPLE I
A preparation was formulated comprising the following ingredients: i) 20. 0 % benzyl benzoate; ii) 5.0% diethyl toluamide; iii) 4.0% zinc carbonate; iv) 2.0 % zinc oxide; v) 0.2 % allantoin; vi) 63.4% petrolatum; vii) 0.2 % tea tree oil; viii) 0.2 % peppermint oil; and ix) 5.0% white oil.
The above preparation was formulated by mixing the ingredients together at room temperature. The zinc carbonate was present as calamine. The preparation was made in the form of a salve. s
Some horses in a field were divided into two groups. The first group was treated with the salve. The second group was not treated with the salve.
The group that was treated with the salve suffered considerably less bites from flying insects such for example as midges and mosquitoes than the group that was not treated with the salve. Where the horses in the first group were bitten, then irritation such for example as stinging and itching appeared to be considerably less than occurred for those horses that were bitten in the second group. This observation was made because it was noticed that the horses in the first group appeared to be rubbing their manes, tails and other body parts considerably less than those horses that were bitten in the second group.
The irritation resulting from the bites often results in rubbing that causes the horses to lose their hair in the area suffering the irritation. The preparation of the present invention assisted in hair regrowth due to the inclusion in the preparation of the allantoin which is a keratolytic agent.
Where the hair was destroyed as a result of rubbing following a bite by an insect, it was noted that hair regrowth commenced quickly due to the speedy alleviation of the irritation in the bitten area, and therefore the removal of the need to rub that particular area.
EXAMPLE 11
A similar test as above for Example I was carried out on some ponies. The ponies were divided into two groups and substantially the same results were achieved as for the horses mentioned in Example 1.
It is to be appreciated that the Examples given above have been given by way of illustration only and that modifications may be effected.
Thus, for example, the preparation is effective against flying insects other than midges and mosquitoes. Generally, the preparation may be effective against midges, mosquitoes, black flies, knots, horse flies and other similar insects of the type that bite and suck blood. The white oil may be removed or replaced by another ingredient having the same effect.
