Abstract

A vehicle side guard/skirt/body kit for heavy goods vehicles is releasably secured by means of fasteners each comprising a stud having a hollow interior and side slots with axial and circumferential portions and a socket with a diametral internal cross pin to engage the slots. The socket is pushed axially onto the stud against spring bias and turned to engage the pin in the circumferential slot pads. A washer/protective sleeve arrangement engages over the spring.

4. This invention relates to a quick-release system and in particular for 5. truck and trailer side guard / skirt / body kit for heavy goods vehicles. 6.
7. Each truck and trailer has the capacity to fit a side guard / skirt / body 8. it to increase spray-suppression and increase fuel economy. The 9. purpose of this quick-release system is to allow the side guard / skirt / 10. body kit to be removed and or replaced manually without the need for 11. specific tools. This allows repairs to the inner parts of the vehicle. In 12. addition, the same system will be applied at the bottom of the panel 13. covering the vehicles tyres which will allow it to swing by means of 14. hinges from the body of the trailer, etc. 15.
16. Typically the means for releasably securing the skirt / body kit 17.comprises a quick-release arrangement. The quick-release 18. arrangement will / may comprise a tube with locking pin, a 19. spring, a one-part washer and cover and a locking fastener. 20.
21. Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way 22. of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in 23. which: 24. Fig 1 is a perspective view of the quick-release system 25. showing the full placement of the component parts.

7. Referring to the drawings, the quick-release mechanism allows quick 8. removal of the side guard / skirt / body kit for ease of access to 9. maintain the inner workings and to allow quick tyre change / 10. maintenance or for any other purpose. 11.
12.The quick-release mechanism comprises (i) an arm with a locking pin 13. running across the centre hollow from each side. (ii) a locking fastener 14.with a hollow constructed as in Fig 2 which is fastened by turning 15. until it locks. (iii) a spring which is placed on the exterior 16. surface of the locking fastener. (iv) the one part plastic cover and 17. washer which protects the components of the quick release system 18. and the side guard / skirt / body kit. 19.
20. To assemble the piece the locking fastener is pushed through 21.the side guard / skirt / body kit until the head is in line with the 22. depression in the side skirt. The washer and cover is placed over the 23. barrel of the locking fastener. The spring is then pushed over the 24. barrel of the fastener. 25.
26. The mechanism is held in place when the exterior head of the 27. locking fastener is twisted to lock onto the locking pin in the barrel. 28.
29. For quick removal of the side guard / skirt / body for access the 30. locking fastener head is depressed and turned. This 31. releases the mechanism from the locking pin on the bar. 32.
33.The materials used can be metal, fibreglass, aluminium, 34.hbreglass resin nylon or any other suitable material.

5. side guard / skirt / body kit comprising an adapted body
6. to ensure appropriate housing of the locking fastener head
7. and hinging for the wheel covering.

9. 2. A quick-release mechanism as claimed in Claim 1 for use with a
10. side guard / skirt / body kit arrangement of a vehicle wherein the
11. guard /skirV body kit envelops at least 50% of the tyre of a vehicle.

13. 10. A quick release system substantially as hereinbefore described
14.with reference to or as shown in the accompanying drawings.

13. 3. A quick-release mechanism as claimed in any preceding claim 14.wherein the side guard / skirt / body kit arrangement of a vehicle guard 15./skirV body kit envelops at least 65 to 70% of the tyre of a vehicle.

17.4. A quick-release mechanism as claimed in any preceding claim 18.wherein the side guard / skirt / body kit arrangement of a vehicle 19. comprises means for releasably securing the side guard / skirt / body 20. kit to the frame of the vehicle. 21.

A side guard / skirt / body kit arrangement as claimed in Claim 4 27.wherein the quick release system comprises a rod fixed to the 28. side guard / skirt / body kit arrangement by means of a locking fastener 29.securable to the vehicle by means of a socket secured to the vehicle 30. frame. 31.
