VEHICLE WHEEL PROTECTOR
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a vehicle wheel protector, an assembly comprising a vehicle wheel protector secured to a wheel and to a method of protecting a vehicle wheel.
lo Background to the Invention
Vehicle wheels and in particular alloy wheels for cars are decorative and a lot of time and effort is spent in devising new designs for alloy wheels. Accordingly, such wheels are relatively expensive. Since the aesthetic appearance of the wheel is important it is desirable not to damage the wheel. Since alloy wheels essentially do not have hub caps which are cheap to replace the driver of the car must drive so as to inhibit any damage occurring to the wheels. In particular, when parking next to a kerb the wheel may be scuffed if scraped or brushed against the kerb. However, the driver may not always correctly judge the location of the kerb and damage may inadvertently occur. In addition, in certain locations, for example narrow streets or with large cars, it may be very difficult or even impossible to prevent the wheel connecting the kerb.
Low profile Lyres are frequently used with alloy wheels for aesthetic reasons. Such Lyres do not significantly project laterally when compared to normal Lyres. Normal tyres may offer a degree of protection against scuffing by projecting laterally from the wheel and thereby abutting the kerb prior to the wheel. However, this effect does not occur significantly with low profile Lyres.
It is an aim of the present invention to overcome at least one problem associated with the prior art whether referred to herein or otherwise.

Description of the Preferred Embodiments
As shown in Figure 1, the vehicle wheel protector 10 or vehicle wheel rim protector comprises an elongate member 12 which is arranged, in use, to be releasably secured to a vehicle wheel 11 or vehicle wheel rim in order to protect a part of the circumference of the face 20 of the vehicle wheel 11. The term vehicle wheel shall be used to include the term vehicle wheel rim. The vehicle wheel is considered to be the central part not including any Lyre which may be secured around the vehicle wheel. The vehicle wheel protector 10 extends around the outer edge 18 of the vehicle wheel 11 and extends radially inwardly in order to protect the surface of the outer edge of the vehicle wheel 11. The outer edge of the vehicle wheel 11 or vehicle wheel rim generally extends or projects outwardly from the plane of the face 20 of the vehicle wheel 11. In addition, kerbs are generally low in height and, therefore, the outer edge 18 of the vehicle wheel 11 is most at risk from being scuffed whilst being positioned adjacent to a kerb. Furthermore, kerbs are generally angle upwardly away from the road so that the wall of the tyre may initially connect the kerb. However, it is a common and frequent problem that the face of vehicle wheels 11 are scuffed or scratched or otherwise damaged by kerbs.
The elongate member 12 comprises a plastics which may be coloured in order for the vehicle wheel protector 10 to be not visually significant and to detract from the aesthetics of the vehicle wheel, for example, the plastics may be silver or clear. The vehicle wheel protector 10 may display a logo or other element or information lo thereon, for example the vehicle wheel protector 10 may be imprinted with logos underneath a transparent surface to offer further methods of personalisation. In alternative embodiments the elongate member 12 may comprise a metal (which may have a polished or scrubbed surface) or carbon fibre.
The elongate member 12 comprises a flexible material in order for the elongate member 12 to be bent around the circumference of the vehicle wheel 11. The elongate member 12 comprises connecting means in order to connect the longitudinal ends 22, 24 of the elongate member 12 together, as shown in Figure 5 and Figure 6. The connecting means comprise a first connecting member 40 located on one longitudinal end 22 of the elongate member 12 and a second connecting member 42 located on the other longitudinal end 24 of the elongate member 12. The first connecting member 40 comprises a male member which is arranged, in use, to engage with the second connecting member 42 which comprises a co-operating female member.
The male member projects outwardly along the longitudinal axis of the elongate member 12. The male member comprises a stem 44 having a head portion 46 located at the end thereof. The head portion 46 comprises a saw tooth which is arranged to co-operate with an engagement surface 48 provided by the female member 42. The male member 40 comprises resilient means such that the head can be moved into or out of engagement with the engagement surface.
In use, the head portion 46 of the male member is inserted into the female member. The stem 44 flexes until the head engages in the first engagement portion 52. This lo engagement prevents the male member from being slidably withdrawn from the female member.
If the vehicle wheel protector 10 is not securely fitted to the vehicle wheel 11, the circumference of the elongate member 12 can be reduced by further inserting the male member into the female member. This further movement causes the head portion 46 of the male member to slide up a cooperating portion of the engagement surface 48 and then to locate within a second engagement portion 54.
Each engagement portion includes a co-operating portion 56 and a retaining portion 58 which co-operates with a co- operating portion 60 as a retaining portion 62 on the head portion 46 in order to allow the male member to be inserted but not withdrawn from the female member.
The connecting means may include release means in order to enable the male member to be withdrawn from the female member. The release means comprises a hole 64 or passageway which enables a release member (not shown) for example a release pin to be inserted in order to flex the male member or stem 44 to move the head portion 46 from an engaged position to a free position in order to enable the male member to be withdrawn from the female member.
Once connected the elongate member 12 forms a contiguous ring or an annular member. The longitudinal ends 22, 24 may be spaced from each other or the length of the elongate member 12 may be such that the longitudinal ends 22, 24 of the elongate member 12 substantially contact each other. For example, the connecting means may be adjustable and once the longitudinal ends 22, 24 are connected the connecting means can be adjusted to urge or move the longitudinal ends towards (or away from) each other. Accordingly, an elongate member 12 may be used for different sizes of wheels. However, when secured to vehicle wheels 11 of a large diameter the longitudinal ends 22, 24 of the elongate member 12 may not touch but may be spaced by a short distance. However, the vehicle wheel protector 10 is still securely secured to the vehicle wheel 11 by the adjustable connecting means urging the longitudinal ends 22, 24 of the elongate member 12 towards each other and therefore the elongate member 12 JO may effectively grip a part of the vehicle wheel 11.
The vehicle wheel protector 10 comprises a first flange 30 and a second flange 32, as shown in Figure 2, Figure 3 and Figure 6. The first flange 30 comprises a protection flange 30 whilst the second flange 32 comprises a securement flange 32. In use, the protection flange 30 extends around the circumference of the outer face of the vehicle wheel 11. The securement flange 32 locates between the vehicle wheel and the tyre 34 in order to secure the vehicle wheel protector 10 to the vehicle wheel 11.
The securement flange 32 is tapered in order to wedge between the inner surface 36 (i.e. the surface over which the tyre locates) of the vehicle wheel 11 and the tyre 34.
The tapered edge enables the securement flange 32 to be pushed between the tyre 34 and the vehicle wheel 11 whilst the Lyre 34 is inflated. However, in order to aid the securement of the vehicle wheel protector 10, the tyre may be partially or substantially wholly deflated. Once the securement flange 32 is located the connecting means can 0 then connect longitudinal ends 22, 24 and then tightened in order to be fully secured to the vehicle wheel protector 10 to the vehicle wheel 11.
The securement flange 32 is integral with the protection flange 30 and may join at a shoulder portion. The shoulder portion may be spaced from the edge of the outer edge of the vehicle wheel 11, in use.
The protection flange 30 may extend radially inwardly by more than 5mm but less than 20mm. Preferably the protection flange 30 extends radially inwardly by substantially 10mm.
The securement flange 32 may extend from the shoulder portion by substantially 15mm.
The elongate member 12 may be substantially 4mm thick although the securement flange 32 is tapered to a relatively pointed edge (but not sharp).
The vehicle wheel protector 10 is suitable for use with different size vehicle wheel within a range. For example a single sized vehicle wheel protector 10 may be used for vehicle wheels in a range of 1" diameter.
The vehicle wheel protector is suitable for vehicle wheels having a diameter from substantially 15n to 22".
The vehicle wheel protector is particularly for use on cars with alloy wheels with low profile Lyres.
lo Another embodiment of a vehicle wheel protector comprises a shaped protection flange 30, as shown in Figure 4. The shaped protection flange 30 comprises a convex extending profile or outwardly curved surface in order to project outwardly from the face of the vehicle wheel in order to provide further protection.
