Abstract

Esters of cellulose with the higher unsaturated fatty acids are prepared by treating the carbohydrate with the acid chloride of the fatty acid. Suitable fatty acids are oleic acid, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, and the unsaturated acids of train oils. Examples are given of the preparation of the linolenic acid ester of hydrocellulose and cellulose, the carbohydrate being heated with the acid chloride of the acid in the presence of pyridine or dimethylaniline. The products are viscous or limpid oils which are soluble in hydrocarbons, also turpentine &c., and are suitable as substitutes for drying oils and in the preparation or manufacture of varnishes, artificial threads, films, plastic compositions etc.; they are rendered insoluble by atmospheric oxidation or by heating, and the drying process may be accelerated by the addition of siccatives; thus, the linoleic acid ester of soluble starch when dissolved in benzine or turpentine with the addition of a small quantity of cobalt linoleate readily dries to a hard elastic insoluble layer, and the corresponding ester of hydrocellulose gives an insoluble product of high melting point when its solution in volatile hydrocarbons is heated in vacuo to 100 DEG C. to drive off the solvent, and grape sugar linoleate readily dries, after the addition of resinate of lead or manganese. Specifications 201,510 and 208,685, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], are referred to.ALSO:Esters of starch, sugars and other carbohydrates with the higher unsaturated fatty acids are prepared by treating the carbohydrate with the acid chloride of the fatty acid. Suitable fatty acids are oleic acid, linoleic acid, linolenic acid and the unsaturated acids of train oils. Examples are given of the preparation of the linoleic acid ester of cane sugar, potato starch, soluble starch, and grape sugar, the carbohydrate being heated with the acid chloride of the acid in the presence of pyridine or dimethylaniline.
