Abstract

239,579. Garrard, C. G., and Walpole, G. S. June 5, 1924. Ball and roller bearings.-A device which functions as a cam providing rolling contact comprises an odd number of balls or rollers 3 arranged in a diametrical passage 2 through a rotary shaft or member 1 and protruding so as to transmit a thrust 'between a track or abutment 4 and a member 5 to be actuated when brought into alignment therewith as the shaft &c. is rotated. The balls &c. and tracks may be of hardened steel, the internal balls &c. mav be of smaller diameter than the projecting one and the orifices of the passage may be slightly inturned or other means provided to prevent the balls falling out. In the application to a multicylinder internal-combustion engine shown in Fig. 2, the shaft 1 is mounted in a casing 8 secured to the valve casing or cylinder head 10, the casing being formed with a bore 9 within which the balls &c. 3 roll an easy fit. With the several passages 2 in the shaft 1 arranged at various angles to suit the timing, the balls &c. rolling idly on the surface of the bore 9 serve the purpose of ball or roller bearings to support the shaft.
