- 1 VEHICLE SEATING
This invention relates to seat assemblies, particularly but not exclusively, for vehicles.
It is known from EP-A-0492281 to provide a vehicle seat assembly having a seat base including a seat frame, a seat support and a seat cushion supported by the seat frame and a backrest. The backrest is pivotally connected at a lower end thereof to the seat base and 5 can be tilted forward from the normal seating position to a utility position in which a back surface of the backrest is usable as a table.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved vehicle seat assembly.
e. À According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a seat assembly for a vehicle, the seat assembly comprising a seat base and a backrest, the seat base including À 10 a seat frame, a seat support and a seat cushion supported by the seat frame and the :. backrest being pivotally connected to the seat frame to allow the backrest to be tilted between a relatively upright position and a relatively inclined position, wherein the backrest comprises two portions, a lower backrest portion pivotally connected at a lower end thereof to the seat frame and an upper backrest portion pivotally connected at a lower end thereof 15 to an upper end of the lower backrest portion, the upper backrest portion having a rear surface to which is attached a table storage housing in which an extendible table is stored, the arrangement being such that when the upper backrest portion is pivoted forward from a normal seating position to a utility position the table storage housing provides a first table surface and when the extendible table is withdrawn from the table storage housing an 20 additional table surface is provided.
Preferably, the extendible table is slidingly engaged with the table storage housing for sliding movement between a stored position and an extended position.
- 2 The seat cushion may be a two part seat cushion, there being a fixed seat cushion adjacent the lower backrest and a hinged seat cushion at the front of the seat base. In such a case the hinged seat cushion may form a lid for a storage bin in the seat base. The hinged seat cushion may be movable between a normal seating position and a raised 5 position, in which case the hinged seat cushion may be used to support the upper backrest portion when the hinged seat cushion is moved to the raised position and the upper backrest portion is in the utility position,.
The seat assembly may include a headrest attached to an upper end of the upper backrest portion, in which case the headrest may be supported by the raised hinged seat 10 cushion when the upper backrest portion is in the utility position.
) À.. À.e In one preferred arrangement the extendible table extends rearwards when withdrawn À from the table storage housing with the upper backrest portion in the utility position so as to .-. overlie an upper end of the lower backrest portion while in another preferred arrangement À: the extendible table extends forwards when withdrawn from the table storage housing with À À.. 15 the upper backrest portion in the utility position so that a front edge of said extendible table is positioned substantially above a front face of the seat base. In fact, there may be two said extendible tables stored within the table storage housing and in such a case a preferred arrangement is that one of the extendible tables extends rearwards when withdrawn from the table storage housing with the upper backrest portion in the utility 20 position so as to overlie an upper end of the lower backrest portion and the other extendible table extends forwards when withdrawn from the table storage housing with the upper backrest portion in the utility position so that the front edge of said other extendible table is positioned substantially above the front face of the seat base.
The invention also provides, according to a second aspect thereof, a vehicle having at 25 least one seat assembly in accordance with said first aspect of the invention.
- 3 - The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which: Fig.1 is a side view of a seat assembly according to the invention with an upper backrest portion in a normal seating position; 5 Fig.2 is a perspective view of the seat assembly shown in Fig.1 showing a storage box lid in an open position; and Fig.3 is a side view of the seat assembly shown in Figs.1 and 2 showing the upper backrest portion in a utility position.
A seat assembly 10 for a motor vehicle comprises a seat base 11 and a backrest 14 , 10 which are pivotally connected together to allow the backrest to be inclined rearwards from the normal seating position shown in Fig.1 to a reclined position (not shown). The seat Àe base 11 comprises a seat frame 12, a seat support 12a and a seat cushion 13 supported À À À by the seat frame 12. The seat assembly 10 is slidingly connected to a floor structure 5 of I À the vehicle by slide rails 6 to allow the seat assembly to be moved forwards and rearwards À. : 15 within the vehicle. For convenience the terms forward or forwards, rearward or rearwards, À. À. upward and downward relate to the normal seating position of the seat assembly as shown on Fig.1 by the arrows F. R. U and D. The seat assembly 10 also includes a headrest 23 to the rear of which a monitor screen 24 is attached to provide visual information or entertainment to a passenger seated behind the seat assembly. The seat base 11 or, to be 20 precise, the seat support 12a incorporates a storage bin 26 in which small items can be conveniently stored.
The seat frame 12 includes a sub-frame 12b which is connected to the main part of the seat frame by a conventional adjustable pivot mechanism to allow the position of the backrest 14 with respect to the seat base 11 to be varied. The backrest 14 is connected to 25 the sub-seat frame 12b by a similar adjustable pivot mechanism having a release lever 20.
However, the sub-frame 12b may be omitted and the backrest 14 pivotally connected directly to the main seat frame 12 in a more conventional manner.
-4 The seat cushion 13 is a two-part seat cushion with a fixed seat cushion 25a adjacent the backrest 14 and a hinged seat cushion 25b at the front of the seat base 11. The hinged seat cushion 25b is pivotally connected to the seat frame 12 by pivot means (not shown) which allow it to be rotated through approximately 90 . The hinged seat cushion 25b forms 5 a lid for the storage bin 26 and is movable from a normal seating position as shown in Fig.1 to a raised position as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. When in the raised position the hinged seat cushion 25b provides access to the storage bin 26 but can also be used as a support for the backrest 14 as will be described later.
The backrest 14 is formed in two parts, a lower backrest portion 15 pivotally 10 connected at its lower end to the seat sub-frame 12b and an upper backrest portion 16 À having a support frame 18 pivotally connected at its lower end to the upper end of the lower À.. backrest portion 15. A release lever 20 allows the backrest 14 to be moved from its normal À À seating position to the inclined position, movement of the release lever by a vehicle À.. occupant releases a latch (not shown) which can hold the backrest 14 in one of several À.. : 15 positions. A second release lever 22 is provided to allow the upper backrest portion to be À À À rotated forward from its normal seating position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 to a utility position as shown in Fig.3. The release lever 22, when operated by a vehicle occupant releases a latch (not shown) used to hold the upper backrest portion 16 in its normal seating position and preferably in one of several positions.
20 The upper backrest portion 16 has a rear surface 30 to which is attached a table storage housing 31 for storing two extendible tables 32, 33, each of which provides an additional table surface when withdrawn from the table storage housing 31. The table storage housing 31 is made from a rigid plastics material and is in the form of an elongate rectangular tubular member arranged such that the open ends of a cavity defined therein 25 are located at the upper and lower ends of the table storage housing 31 when the upper backrest portion 16 is in the normal seating position. Although in the example described the table storage housing 31 is permanently fixed to the upper backrest portion in a pre
- 5 determined position, it will be appreciated that the table storage housing could be fastened to the upper backrest portion such that it can removed if not required or could be hinged such that it can be rotated relative to the upper backrest portion from the position shown to a position at right angles to the position shown.
5 Each extendible table 32, 33 is slidingly engaged with the cavity in the table storage housing 31 for sliding movement between a stored position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and an extended position, as shown in Fig.3. Detent means (not shown) are used to retain the extendible tables 32, 33 in the storage position when not required. Each extendible table 32, 33 is made from a rigid plastics material and includes an aperture for supporting a . 10 beverage container 36, 37 and a grab rail 34, 35 at one end. The grab rails 34, 35 can be A. used by a vehicle occupant to steady themselves when the vehicle is in motion and as a hand grip to assist with moving the extendible table 32, 33 from the stored position to the À extended position.
1 À. À Operation of the seat assembly 10 is as follows. During normal use the upper À.. 15 backrest portion 16 and the hinged seat cushion 25b are both in the normal seating position to allow the seat assembly 10 to be used as a seat for a vehicle occupant. The seat assembly 10 can be converted into a table unit by using the release lever 22 to release the upper backrest portion 16 and folding the upper backrest portion 16 forward into the utility position. In this position it can be used in its own right as a table, an upward 20 facing surface of the table storage housing 31 forming a usable table surface upon which an object such as a laptop computer 38 can be placed. If more space is required one or both of the extendible tables 32, 33 can be slid from the retracted position to the extended position to provide an additional table surface. The arrangement is such that when the upper backrest portion 16 is pivoted forward from the normal seating position to the utility 25 position the table storage housing 31 provides a first table surface and when the or each extendible table 32, 33 is withdrawn from the table storage housing 31 one or more additional table surfaces are provided.
- 6 Preferably, the hinged seat cushion 25b is moved to its raised position before the upper backrest portion 16 is moved to the utility position. This allows the hinged seat cushion 25b to support the upper backrest portion 16 and, in the example shown, when the upper backrest portion 16 is in the utility position, the headrest 23 attached to the upper 5 backrest portion 16 is supported by the raised hinged seat cushion 25b. This provides good support for the upper backrest portion 16 and ensures a relatively stable working surface. It will be appreciated that the hinged seat cushion 25b could be moved after the upper backrest portion has been moved to the utility position but this is less convenient since the hinged seat cushion 25b then has to be wedged under the already lowered upper 10 backrest portion 16.
he À . When the upper backrest portion 16 is in the utility position one of the extendible À.. tables 32 extends rearwards from the table storage housing 31 when fully withdrawn from À . À the table storage housing 31 so as to overlie an upper end of the lower backrest portion 15.
À.. À This prevents objects from falling down between the table storage housing 31 and the À. : 15 lower backrest portion 15. Similarly, the other extendible table 33, when fully withdrawn . À from the table storage housing 31 with the upper backrest portion 16 in the utility position, extends forwards so that its front edge is positioned substantially above the front face 11 a of the seat base 11. This allows the extendible table 33 to be used by a person sat in an adjacent seat and in particular allows such a person to utilise the beverage container 20 support provided in the extendible table 33. Also, by arranging for the extendible table 33 to extend fully forward in such a manner, the risk of spillage onto the underlying seat base is minimised.
It will be appreciated that several seat assemblies could be fitted to a vehicle. For example, in the case of a vehicle having three rows of seats, the middle row could use two 25 or three seat assemblies in accordance with the invention. In a vehicle having only two rows of seats then one or both of the front row of seats could use two seat assemblies according to the invention.
