Abstract
A portable tank assembly comprises a tank body 1, a sheath 31 encircling the tank body spaced radially outwardly of the tank periphery, and means 15 for mounting the sheath in spaced relation to the tank body. The tank body comprises a cylindrical portion 9 and domed ends 5,7. The cylindrical portion 9 is extended below the lower end 7 to connect with a base structure to which the sheath is attached at its lower end. Furthermore, the cylindrical portion 9 is extended at its upper end and is provided with means connecting it to the upper end of the sheath 31. More particularly said means comprises extensions to lifting lugs 23 and bracing means 25 interconnects the lifting lugs.
Description
Title: Portable Tank 23931 75 DESCRIPTION
The present invention relates to a portable tank.
Portable tanks of the type with which the present invention is particularly concerned are also known as intermediate bulk containers (IBC's) or offshore minitanks. They are frequently used on offshore installations.
They comprise a tank body, usually designed for containing a liquid, and means to facilitate handling of the tank. One known design comprises a box like framework made of hollow section steel disposed along the corners of the box-like framework and within which the tank body is located. The bottom surface of the box like structure incorporates reception locations for the forks of a fork lift device to facilitate movement of the tank from one location to another. The framework also incorporates additional horizontal bars extending between the upright corner posts which together with the uprights provide a measure of impact resistance.
However, the known framework suffers from the disadvantage that it is heavy, is time consuming to construct and furthermore it only provides limited impact protection.
It is an aim of the present invention to provide an improved construction of portable tank.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a portable tank assembly comprising a tank body, a sheath encircling the tank body spaced radially outwardly of the tank periphery, and means for mounting the sheath in spaced relation to the tank body.
Most usually, the tank comprises a cylindrical portion with domed upper and lower ends. Conveniently, the cylindrical portion is extended to provide the means mounting it to the base structure. The base structure conveniently comprises a circular base plate having a bracing structure secured thereto and defining reception locations for fork lift arms accessible at four locations disposed 90 apart. The base plate is apertured for drainage purposes.
In one embodiment the sheath comprises a cylindrical tube secured to the radial periphery of the base plate and extending upwardly therefrom. Preferably the cylindrical portion of the tank is extended at the upper end beyond the connection with the upper doomed end. The upper extended portion is provided with means connecting it with the aforedescribed sheath. Aperturing is provided to receive lifting means of a crane or other tank handling apparatus. Conveniently lifting lugs are attached to the upper cylindrical extension of the tank body adapted to receive lifting means for example by the provision of aperturing. Preferably bracing means interconnects the lifting lugs.
Most usually the tank assembly further comprises a base structure incorporating fork lift reception portions, means for mounting the tank body with respect to the base structure.
The present invention will now be described further, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings; in which: Figure 1 is a side view of one embodiment of a portable tank assembly embodying the invention, Figure 2 is a plan view of the portable tank assembly of figure 1, Figure 3 is an inverted plan view of the portable tank assembly of figure 1, and
( Figure 4 is a side view corresponding to figure 1 but with the protective sheath removed.
Referring to the drawings, there is illustrated a portable tank assembly comprising a tank I defined by a cylindrical wall portion 3 and upper and lower domed ends 5, 7. The cylindrical wall portion is part of a cylindrical sleeve 9 that extends axially beyond the connection of the domed ends with the sleeve. I.e. the domed ends are secured at a desired position within the sleeve 9. Thus upper 11 and lower 13 cylindrical end portions are defined. The lower cylindrical end portion 13 connects with a circular base plate 15 of a base structure. The base structure incorporates pockets 11 for fork lift arms. The pockets intersect one another at 90 apart. The lower cylindrical end portion 13 has a cut out 17 to afford access to a lower tank connection 19.
The upper cylindrical end portion 11 is conveniently cut away to form a castellated top defining four upstanding portions 21 set 90 apart. A lifting lug 23 is secured to each upstanding portion 21. A bracing structure comprising a rectangular framework 25 interconnects the lifting lugs 23. The lifting lugs 23 have radial extensions 27 that project beyond the radial extent of the cylindrical sleeve 9 forming the tank body. An outer cylindrical sleeve 31 is secured to the periphery of the base plate 15 by any convenient means. It extends upwardly from the base plate and is secured to the lifting lug extensions 27.
The extension of the tank wall beyond the ends of the tank provides an advantageous mounting point for lifting lugs. In conjunction with a radially extended base structure it enables a more efficient impact protection means to be provided. The assembly is considerably simpler to produce than the prior art design and hence is
more economical to produce.
