Abstract

A sealing ring or gasket 10 for a pipeline joint is so formed that its outer section 13 can fold back over its anchored section 16, 17; the folding movement of the outer section 13 of the seal ring occurs about a recess 11 which mitigates the possible tearing effect on the anchored section 16, 17 during the jointing process. The joint is formed when the spigot end of a pipe 15 enters the socket end of another pipe 14 and makes contact with the outer section 13 of the seal ring and further axially directed force causes elongate section 18 of the seal ring 10 to fold above recess 11 and come to rest under compression on the anchored section 16, 17 of the seal ring 10 to form a flexible sealed joint. The folding of seal ring 10 also resists the separation of the spigot 15 from the socket 14 when the joint is completed.

Description

r PIPE SECTION HAVING A SEALING MEMBER
This invention provides a seal between the socket inner face, and the spigot outer face of preferably concrete pipe sections, thereby preventing outflow or ingress of liquids from the jointed pipes. The annular seal may be formed from an appropriate elastomeric material, for example, rubber or plastic.
To overcome the problems of sealing members cast into the inner face of the socket end of a pipe, the said seal being anchored into the wall of a concrete pipe so that when the spigot end is offered into the socket, the outer surface of the spigot engages the seal and under axially directed force compresses the seal member, and forward movement of the spigot causes drag to take place, which may in turn, result in the seal being torn away from its anchorage in the socket wall rendering joint ineffective. The use of roll rings and slide rings have certain drawbacks, in that the rings have to be stretched and positioned over the spigot with exactness, and that the ring is not displaced during the jointing process.
The object of this invention is to provide an annular seal member formed so that midway between the inner and outer edges of the seal, a semicircular recess may be formed within the inner surface of the seal member, which aids the protruding portion of the seal to fold back ( pivet about the recess) and come to rest on the rear portion of the annular seal, thus mitigating the possible tearing effect on the seal from its anchored position within the socket during the jointing and disjointing process. The action of the protruding portion of the annular seal member being folded back as a result of the spigot entering the socket, causes a natural tension to form on the folded stretched seal member, which will be applied to the outside circumference of the spigot end of the pipe, and may reduce the amount of compression required on the seal member to effect a fluid tight joint.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Fig. 1 shows a cross section of a pipe socket 14 with the annular sealing member 10 cast into socket recess 16 with seal portion 18 protruding from the inner face of socket 14.
Fig. 2 is a section of the wall of a pipe socket 14 shown in Fig. 1 and a pipe spigot 15 disposed therein, seal member 10 in the final configuration, being compressed forming a sealed flexible joint between the inner face of socket 14 and outer face of spigot 15.
Fig. 3 is a cross section of annular seal member 10 formed so that protruding portion 18 may be off-set at an angle to the rear portion thereof, the angle of leading edge 13 is such that it presents a flush surface to the spigot face 15, the annular seal may also incorporate an anchoring portion 12 which is embedded in concrete at the moulding stage, the seal may also be formed with a semi-circular recess 11 which aids the folding action of the seal, the rear edge of the seal 17 abutting to the face of recess 16 in socket 14 thus providing resistance to forward movement of seal 10 under compression during the jointing process. Protruding portion 18 may be formed in varying thickness to the anchored portion of the seal member, to accommodate varying tolerances which may occur between the inner and outer faces of the socket and spigot dimensions. Seal member 10 may further incorporate a step 19 in the anchored portion which serves to arrest forward movement of leading edge 13 of seal member 10 in the final stage of the jointing process.
Fig. 4 shows the annular seal member 10 positioned over a pallet 20 and lying substantially flush to the pallet prior to moulding, the protruding portion 18 of the seal may be coated with a releasing agent to facilitate release of said portion after the pipe moulding process has taken place.
In accordance with this invention the joint between two pipes is made when the spigot end 15 of a pipe is positioned within the socket end of a pipe 14, the joint being completed when the protruding portion 18 of annular seal 10 is subjected to axially directed force exerted by the spigot end as it enters the socket, causing the protruding section of seal member 10 to fold back over and coming to rest under compression on the rear anchored portion of the seal, thus making a sealed flexible joint. The effect of the folded seal member between the outer face of the socket and the inner face of the spigot, will in turn offer resistance to separation of the spigot from the socket when the joint is completed.

Claims (8)

CLAIMS WHAT I CLAIM IS:
1. A seal member that provides a seal between the socket inner face and the spigot outer face of preferably concrete pipe sections, thereby preventing the outflow or ingress of liquids from the jointed pipes, the annular seal may be formed from an appropriate elastomeric material, for example, rubber or plastic.
2. A seal member as claimed in claim 1 wherein the none-anchored portion of the seal member is so formed that after the moulding process and removal of the pipe from the pallet, it protrudes radially inwardly from the inner surface of the socket face.
3. A seal member as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the seal member may incorporate an anchoring portion which is embedded in the concrete pipe section at the moulding stage, thus mitigating the possible tearing effect on the seal from its anchored position when jointing.
4. A seal member as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the seal member may further incorporate a step in the anchored portion of the seal member which serves to arrest forward movement of the unanchored folded section of the seal which abutts to the step in the rear anchored portion of the seal member during the jointing process.
5. A seal member as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 or claim 3 wherein the seal member may also be formed to include a semi-circular recess about the outer surface of the seal member which may be positioned opposite the anchoring portion to aid the folding action of the unachored portion of the seal member during the jointing process.
6. A seal member as claimed in claim 1 wherein a seal member may vary in length and thickness across the anchored and unanchored portions to accomodate the tolerances of different pipe section profiles.
7. A seal member as claimed in claim 1 wherein a seal member may be attached/bonded to either the socket inner face surface, or the spigot outer face surface after the pipe manufacturing process has taken place, by using an appropriate adhesive agent.
8. A seal member according to any one of the preceding claims.
