Abstract
A lifting mechanism comprises a base (2, Fig 1) having wheels (3), a top part 5-8 pivotally attached to the base and raised relative thereto by detachable lever 11 and a locking mechanism 9, (12, Fig 1) to retain the top in its raised position. Preferably the mechanism 9, (12) comprises a catch (12) on the base and a keeper 9 on the top moved into and out of its locking position by rotation of the lever 11 about its longitudinal axis. Preferably the top comprises two spaced lifting arms 5. The mechanism can be used for moving pool and like tables or amusement equipment.

TRANSPORTATION DEVICE
This invention relates to devices used for relocating heavy objects such as pool tables and amusement equipment. Such objects are particularly unwieldy and difficult 5 to move without causing damage or injury.
Prior art lifting devices comprise complex systems of scissor jacks and
hydraulically assisted lifting mechanisms activation of which generally involves a repeated pumping action, incorporation of a motor, or a significant amount of handle turning. 10 The present invention aims to simplify relocation of large objects by providing a single motion lifting device with rigid locking mechanism.
According to the present invention there is provided a lifting device comprising: a base having wheels attached thereto; a lifting mechanism pivotably attached to the base around a pivot axis, the 15 pivoting axis being positioned such that, in use, a lever can be used to apply a moment about the axis to raise the lifting mechanism;and a locking mechanism for retaining the lifting mechanism in a raised position, in use. The lifting mechanism may comprise a single lifting surface or two separate lifting 20 arms. Engagement of the locking mechanism may be actuated by rotation of the lever, this lever may be detachable.
One example of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an isometric view of the trolley in its predeployed position; 25 Figure 2 is an isometric view of the trolley in its deployed position; and Figures 3A and B illustrate the locking mechanism of the present invention.
Figure 1 illustrates a device according to the present invention. A trolley 1 comprises a base 2 with castors 3 positioned approximate to each corner and mounted on support legs 4. A lifting mechanism is attached to the base 2. The lifting mechanism 30 comprises two supporting surfaces 5, which are attached to the base 2 via primary and secondary pivoting members 6 and 7. The secondary pivoting member 7 merely acts a support between the support arm 5 and the base 2, the primary pivoting member 6, however, is attached to the support arm 5 and pivots at the base 2 about a mid point of the primary pivoting member 6. This pivoting member 6 extends beyond the base 2 and
is attached at its distal end to a bar 8, the other end of which, is attached to the second primary pivoting member 7 in a rigid configuration.
A locking mechanism 9 is located midway along the bar 8, in line with an attachment point 10 for a lever 11. In use, the lever 11 is inserted into the attachment 5 point 10 such that the lever is substantially vertical. The trolley is located underneath the object to be moved, lowering the lever 11 as necessary in order to position the trolley.
Once the trolley is suitably located the lever 11 is lowered further such that the support arms 5 come into contact with the object to be moved. The user then forces this lever 11 into a substantially horizontal position, to raise the object off the ground. Figure 2 10 illustrates the raised position of the trolley. Once the lever is in this substantially horizontal position the lever 11 can be rotated to activate the locking mechanism 9 as illustrated in Figures 3A and 3B. Upon rotation, the locking mechanism will engage with a slot plate 12 which is rigidly attached to the base 2, thus reducing the mechanism to a rigid structure, capable of bearing the load of the object.
15 In most cases, the lever 11 will then be removed before the object is relocated to enhance safety during the transportation process. Once removed, either in use or during storage of the trolley, the lever 11 may be located in the 13 attached to the base 2.

Claims (5)
1. A lighting mechanism comprising; a base having wheels attached thereto, 5 a lifting mechanism pivotably attached to the base around a pivot axis, the pivoting axis being positioned such that, in use, a lever can be used to apply a moment about the axis to raise the lifting mechanism;and a locking mechanism for retaining the lifting mechanism in a raised position, in use.
2. The lifting mechanism of claim 1, comprising a single lifting surface.
3. The lifting mechanism of claim 1, comprising two separate lifting arms.
15
4. The lifting mechanism of claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein engagement of the locking mechanism may be actuated by rotation of the lever.
5. The lifting mechanism of any proceeding claim, further comprising a detachable lever.
