Abstract

238,166. Mewes, R. F., and Mewes, R. K. E. Feb. 4, 1924. Separating gaseous mixtures by liquefaction. -In the liquefaction and separation of gaseous mixtures, such as air, the low boiling-point substance (nitrogen) issuing at the upper end of a rectification column is passed through a condenser in stages and the condensate is collected at a number of points from one or more of which it is returned to the column, the gaseous or liquid nitrogen being withdrawn for use from the last stage. Nitrogen condensing in the tubes 57, Fig. 1, falls back into the column and nitrogen condensing in the tubes 58, 59 collects in the compartment 60 whence it overflows through pipes 61 into the column. Gaseous nitrogen is withdrawn at 4. Liquid oxygen from the vaporizer 8 passes through a reducing valve 36 and is used as condensing medium, gaseous oxygen being withdrawn at 5. Cooled, compressed air initially withdrawn from the column at 62 is passed through coil 55, a coil in the compartment 60 and reducing valve 64 to the middle of the column. In a modification liquid nitrogen withdrawn from one stage is used as condensing medium for an oxygen condenser surrounding the rectifying column. An oxygen vaporizer as shown in Fig. 3 may be used in combination with the nitrogen condenser. It is divided into compartments by circular baffles and a hood 162, liquid oxygen being withdrawn from the centre by the pipe 166 for use in the nitrogen condenser. The vaporizer is heated by compressed air passing through the coils 157, 163 whence it is expanded and led to the middle of the column and by compressed gaseous nitrogen in the coil 159, the nitrogen being expanded and led to the upper part of the column.
