Word and number building apparatus.-In an appliance for teaching spelling or arithmetic, of the kind comprising a shallow box 1 having one or more slots 2 or a series of apertures in the cover below which tapes bearing letters or numerals may be made to pass, each tape is carried by two roller or spools one of which is provided with a flange extending through the cover of the box to enable the tapes to be moved. The tapes 7 pass round a single roller 8 at one end of the box, and separate rollers 5 on a spindle 4 at the other end, the rollers 5 being provided with flanges 6 projecting through slots 3 in the cover. A bridge-piece 9 serves to hold the tapes in the same horizontal plane. A disc 10 is rotatably and detachably mounted on the cover of the box, and pictorial representations of the words to be spelt out on the tapes are provided on sectors of the disc, the representations being viewed through a sector-shaped opening in the cover. A clock dial 18 with movable hands 19, and a sheet of black paper 20 for marking with crayons or chalks are provided. An additional slot 23, Fig. 6, or a series of apertures may be provided in the bottom of the box to enable characters or numerals craried on the reverse side of the tapes to be viewed, the tapes being given a twist at two points. In a modification, the disc 10 is replaced by a series of leaves detachably hinged to the box cover.
