Abstract

Air-heating fittings; air supply, regulating; grates; o p e n fireplaces; lighting fires.- An air-heater for use in a fireplace comprises flexible air-tubes 9 extending between air inlet header 7<a> resting on the back of the hearth and an outlet header 8 at the top of the fireplace. The flexible tubes are adjustable to conform to the shape of the fireplace, and are maintained in correct relation to one another by spacer members 33. In the form shown in Fig. 6 the upper header is constructed in two parts 19, 19<1> secured to the inside and outside of a plate 45 bridging the top of the fireplace opening; by means of a damper 24 the heated air may in whole or in part be directed into the room or into the chimney. A weighted arm 29 pivoted to the damper serves to retain it in position. Air is supplied to the lower heater 7a by pipes 10 which form fuel supports and are connected at their front ends to hollow pedestals 11 arranged over openings in the hearth connected to the outer air. The header 7<a>, pipes 10, and pedestals 11 may be connected by a rod arranged axially in the pipe 10 and bent at one point to allow for expansion. A rail 32 in front of the flexible pipes guards them from damage by the fuel. A draught concentrating device, for use in starting fires, is shown in Fig. 8 and comprises a pipe 40 movably connected to one of the pipes 10 and ending in an inverted perforated cup 42 which normally lies on the hearth, but when in use is held adjacent the starting fire to set up a direct draught in the neighbourhood.
