Abstract

237,550. Rival, T. July 28, 1924, [Convention date]. Loose-weight apparatus. - In an automatic weighing machine, the units of the weight are indicated on one board or dial and the fractions on another, and the load counterbalancing mechanism comprises a main balance connected to a pendulous resistant through an auxiliary balance which is mounted on one arm of the main balance, the weight plates of both balances being adapted to pick up loose weights. As shown, the machine comprises a main beam 1 pivoted at O and carrying at one end A a goods plate 2 and at the other end B a frame 3 integral with weights plates K, L. Pivoted on an extension F of the frame 3 is a second beam 4, the arms of which are of the same length as those of the lever 1. The inner end b of the second beam 4 is connected to a pendulous lever 5 and carries weights plates k, l, while the outer end a carries a weight T adapted to counterbalance the lever 5 in its maximum position. A knife-edge e on the weights plates k, l is adapted to engage a knife-edge R on the frame 3 and thereby prevent the beam 4 from pivoting beyond the horizontal. Two equi-armed levers 6, 7 provided with stirrups 8 are each adapted to support two series of weights P, Q, the series P being each provided with two projections 9 adapted to be engaged by the weights plates, and the series Q each with one projection for engagement by the weights plate K, L only. The action of the machine is such that the application of a load exceeding one unit causes the lever 5 to rise to its maximum position, after which the first weights are reached by the weights scales k, l and the lever is depressed to its minimum position, at which position the lower projections of the hooks P are reached by the weights scales K. L and the first weights P. Q are raised. This action' is repeated until the load is balanced or the capacity of the machine reached. Indicating-mechanism.-A double index hand connected to the pendulous lever 5 registers with a dial 10, Fig. 12, marked with two sets of differently coloured graduations one of which ascends in each direction of the scale. Below the dial are a series of apertures 11 disposed in staggered relation and behind which an index 12, Fig. 11. marked in two colours is vertically positioned according to the position of the beam 1. The number of units of the weight is indicated by the number marked adjacent the topmost aperture through which the index 12 is visible, and the set of graduations of the dial upon which the fraction is to be read, is indicated by the colour shown through that aperture.
