Abstract

237,115. Rushen, P. C., (Winship, E.). Aug. 23, 1924. Revolving-cylinder pumps. - In hydraulic variable-speed transmission mechanism comprising revolving-cylinder swash plate pumps and motors, the inclination of the motor swash-plate may be varied, the pump swash-plate rotates on a plate revolving in unison with the driven shaft and valves are provided for reversing the motor. The pump cylinder block is preferably mounted on the driving shaft 26, Fig. 1, by a universal joint and is pressed by a spring 39 against a distributing valve plate 71 secured to the driven shaft, and the backing plate 54 for the pump swash-plate is connected through a cage 73 to the plate 71 so that it rotates with the valve and driven shaft. Pressure and suction chambers 61, 62 are connected to the motor by conduits 86, 87 provided with valves 96, 97 which may be operated to reverse the flow, a by-pass valve being also provided. The motor is similar in general construction to the pump, and the backing plate for its swash-plate is connected at 159, Fig. 9, to the rods 165, 166 of different area. The piston 165 is continually acted on by the liquid pressure from the chamber 61, whereas the larger piston 166 is acted on only when the pressure is sufficient to move a valve 171 against a spring 172 to uncover a port 176. The apparatus is provided with means for collecting and returning leakage liquid, and for maintaining a vacuum in the pump and motor casings.
