Abstract

A clamp 6 for use with a telescopic cymbal stand, allowing single-handed adjustment of the height of the stand. The clamping mechanism comprises a tillable plate 3 with a hole 4 having the same diameter as an upper section 1 of the stand to be clamped. When the tiltable plate 3 is held in a position in which it is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the stand, movement of the upper stand section 1 either upward or downward through the hole 4 is permitted. When the tiltable plate 3 is released, it tilts relative to the longitudinal axis of the stand and further downward movement of the upper stand section 1 is prevented. The clamping mechanism may have an outer casing 5. The device may be manufactured as a discrete unit for use with existing cymbal stand and clamp designs or it may be an integral feature of the stand.

Description

Cymbal Stand Easy Lock This invention relates to an automatic height lock for a cymbal stand, an important part of a drum kit.
Cymbal stands are the equipment used to position musical cymbals and other percussion around a drum kit. They almost always consist of a telescopic set of poles, held together by'locks'at each joint. These take many forms but all locks require two hands to use, controlling the lock while adjusting the height of the upper pole.
It is also very difficult to operate the locks from a position seated at the drum kit. As most drummers use between 2 and 6 cymbals the process of adjusting the height of each one, at the beginning and end of each performance, is over complicated.
This invention is an attachment to a cymbal stand that allows the height of the stand to be adjusted with one hand or even a drumstick from a position sitting behind the drum kit. When the height is adjusted the mechanism locks automatically, alleviating the need to use two hands or touch the mechanism at all. The invention consists of the upper pole of the cymbal stand sliding through a hole in a'latch'piece which, when released, falls to lock the pole tightly in position. When the latch is held the pole slips through.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows in perspective, the mechanism (the easy lock) with casing'cut away'to reveal the parts inside; Figure 2 shows the latch released, holding the pole in place ; Figure 3 shows the latch held (left-hand edge pushed upwards), allowing the pole to slide through the hole ; Figure 4 shows where the easy lock could be fitted onto an existing stand; Figure 5 shows a stand incorporating two easy locks instead of conventional joints.
Referring to the drawing the easy lock comprises a latch 3 with a hole 4 of the same diameter as the upper pole 1 which is the pole to be adjusted in height.
One side of the latch is fixed in place but allowed to tilt up and down (in the drawings this is the right-hand side). The latch is able to move between a horizontal position and an angle where the ;, aft-hand side is lower. As the pole is moved downward the latch also falls on one side angling the hole and locking the pole in place as in Figure 2.
A mechanism attached to a musical cymbal stand has a pair of telescopic poles 1 and 2. Attached to the lower pole 2 is a latch 3 which the upper pole 1 slides through via a hole 4 in the latch of exactly the same diameter as the upper pole. The latch is attached to the mechanism's body 5 at one edge only, allowing it to tilt-freely. As the pole pushes downward under gravity the latch falls into a slanted position and locks the poles movement (figure 2). As the latch is raised the pole falls through the hole (figure 3). The mechanism 6 could be a separate unit to be attached to an ordinary cymbal stand (figure 4), featured in the design of an ordinary cymbal stand alongside the usual cymbal stand joints or could replace the current design of cymbal stand joints (figure 5).

Claims (7)

  1. CLAIMS 1 An attachment to a cymbal stand, part of a drum kit, which allows the height of the stand to be adjusted with one hand or even a drum stick from a position sitting behind the drum kit. The top section, the'pole' which is to be adjusted in height, slides through the tight-fitting hole of a movable'latch'while the latch is held. When the latch is released it drops and holds the pole fast under its own weight. (Thus the harder the pole is pushed downwards; the harder the latch grips it).
  2. 2. An attachment to a cymbal stand as in Claim1 wherein means to guide the'pole'to control its movement as it slides are incorporated.
  3. 3 An attachment to a cymbal stand as in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein a guide means is incorporated to restrict the speed of the poles decent through the latch.
  4. 4. An attachment to a cymbal stand as claimed in any preceding claim which incorporates an outer casing to the mechanism.
  5. 5. A section of a cymbal stand incorporating an attachment as claimed in any preceding claim.
  6. 6. A cymbal stand incorporating two attachments as claimed in any preceding claim.
  7. 7. An attachment as in any preceding claim fitted within any other stand of a drum kit or musical equipment.
