Abstract
A quick release device for attaching a percussion instrument or accessory to a stand comprises a body 1, a pin 2 within the body and biassed by a spring 4 against a shoulder in the body, the pin 2 and body 1 each containing an aperture which can be aligned, by depression of the pin against the spring, for insertion of a support stand. The device is retained on the stand by release of the pin which is sprung into a friction grip. A plurality of pins may be provided at 180 DEG or 120 DEG intervals. When locked the device behaves as a conventional threaded component allowing for fine adjustment. An isolation medium is retained by adhesive within a recess and the device is suitable for suspended or supported instruments. <IMAGE>
Description
A RETENTION DEVICE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH
PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS AND/OR PERCUSSION ACCESSORIES
THIS INVENTION RELATES TO A RETENTION DEVICE USED IN
CONJUNCTION WITH PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS AND/OR
PERCUSSION ACCESSORIES
Over the last few years, a considerable amount of changes have occurred with respect to percussion instruments or percussion accessories but the method of retention has remained similar, with variation in the materials only. The method of retention can be described as a locking component that is threaded onto a shaft, where it's applied force is distributed via a pressure plate (where required) that retains the isolation media, which in turn holds the percussion instrument or percussion accessory in place.
These components can be details as
Locking component - wingnut or threaded device
Pressure plate - metal washer or composite washer
Isolation media - felt pad or composite pad
Two main methods are utilised for holding percussion instruments and/or percussion accessories. These being
(i) The Supported System where the threaded rod is positioned
upwards and the retention components are situated on top
of the percussion instrument or percussion accessary,
therefore the weight of the percussion instrument or
percussion accessory is not supported by the retention
components.
(ii) The Suspended System where the threaded rod is positioned
downwards and the retention components are situated below
the percussion instrument or percussion accessory,
therefore the weight of the percussion instrument or
percussion accessory is supported by the retention
components.
With reference to Drawing No 1 the setting up of the supported system can be described as follows
Due to the threaded system it is a time consuming exercise to remove the locking component [1]. Because of methods used it is difficult to predict when the locking component disengages with the mounting shaft [4], this often leads to the locking component being dropped.
Once the locking component has been disengaged it is necessary to retract the other component(s) [2,3] whilst retaining the locking component [1). This also leads to components being dropped.
The percussion instrument or percussion accessory [5] can now be positioned. The isolation media [3] can now be refitted, followed by a pressure plate [2] (where required). Finally the locking component [1], which has to be sited, engaged and rotated to the required pressure to achieve percussion instrument or percussion accessory [5] retention.
With reference to Drawing No 2 the setting up of the supported system can be described as follows
Due to the threaded system it is a time consuming exercise to remove the locking component [1] which is further complicated by the fact that the shaft is inverted. Because of methods used it is difficult to predict when the locking component disengages with the mounting shaft [4], this often leads to components being dropped.
Once the locking component has been disengaged it is necessary to prevent the pressure plate [2] (where required) and isolation media [3] falling to the ground. Whilst retaining these components the percussion instrument or percussion accessory [4] can now be lifted into position. Whilst holding the percussion instrument or percussion accessory [4], the isolation media [3] can now be refitted and held followed by the pressure plate [2] (where required). Finally by the locking component [1] which has to be sited, engaged and rotated to achieve percussion instrument or percussion accessory [5] retention.
The new invention consists of a self contained percussion instrument and/or percussion accessory retention device incorporating a quick release/locking system, facility to include an isolation media integral within the device and the ability to adopt the same functional characteristics as a conventional threaded component.
With reference to Drawing No 3 the setting up of the supported system using the percussion instrument or percussion accessory retention device can be described as follows
The removal of the percussion instrument or percussion accessory device [1] is achieved by the actuation of the pin [2], once this is depressed the locking system disengages, allowing the unit to be lifted off the shaft, [3].
The percussion instrument or percussion accessory, [4] can now be positioned.
The unit can be lowered onto the shaft [3] where the pin [2] is released and the locking system engages. Finally the device can be rotated to achieve the final pressure required.
To remove the percussion instrument or percussion accessory device, [1] the sequence is reversed.
With reference to Drawing No 4 the setting up of the suspended system using the percussion instrument or percussion accessory retention device can be described as follows
The removal of the percussion instrument or percussion accessary device [1] is achieved by the actuation of the pin [2], once this is depressed the locking system disengages allowing the unit to be lowered off the shaft [3].
The device [1] can now be positioned under the percussion instrument or percussion accessory [4] and the assembly raised onto the shaft [3] where the pin [2] is released and the locking system engages.
Finally the device can be rotated to achieve the final pressure required.
To remove the percussion instrument or accessory device [1] the sequence is reversed.
A specific embodiment of this concept will now be described by the way of example with references to the following drawings.
Drawing No 5 Retention device used in conjunction with
percussion instruments and/or percussion
accessories - 1st Angle
Drawing No 6 Retention device used in conjunction with
percussion instruments and/or percussion
accessories - Parts List
Drawing No 7 Retention device used in conjunction with
percussion instruments and/or percussion
accessories - Non mounted position
Drawing No 8 Retention device used in conjunction with
percussion instruments and/or percussion
accessories - Released position
Drawing No 9 Retention device used in conjunction with
percussion instruments and/or percussion
accessories - Locked position
DRAWING NO 5
Drawing No 5 provides 1st angle elevations of the designers initial concept in which recesses have been incorporated at 600 intervals. As the actuating pin projects from one of the recesses it provides the user with various ergonomic options, these being a two point contact at 1800 separation, a three point contact at 1200 separation, and circumferential contact using one point actuation. These features provide a method of orientation and operation in any situation.
In the final product it is envisaged that the actuating pin is of a dissimilar colour to the body to ensure ease of visual location.
DRAWING NO 6
Drawing No 6 provides sectional views (which have not been hatched for clarity) in which the constructional details may be clearly defined as
The pin [2] which has been inserted into the body [1] and held against a shouldered stop by the applied pressure of the spring [4], acting against the plug [3] and the isolation media [5] which is retained within the designed recess by a suitable adhesive system.
DRAWING NO 7
Drawing No 7 shows the percussion instrument and/or percussion accessory retention device in the stored (non-mounted) position with the pin held against the shouldered stop by the spring pressure.
The clearance hole in the body can be seen to be masked by the threaded portion of the pin. This implies that when the threaded rod is in situ the spring pressure would be applied to the rod until the pin meets the shouldered stop, therefore ensuring wear compensation.
DRAWING NO 8
Drawing No 8 shows the percussion instrument and/or percussion accessory retention device in the released position with the pin fully retracted against the plug. The clearance hole in the body can be clearly seen as the retraction has exposed the oversized section of the pin, enabling the device to be quickly removed or positioned anywhere on the threaded rod.
DRAWING NO 9
Drawing No 9 shows the percussion instrument and/or percussion accessory retention device in the locked position. In this position it can be clearly seen that the threaded portion of the pin has securely engaged with the threaded rod and held firmly in place by the spring pressure. Due to the opposed forces between the body and the pin, the threaded rod is in contact with the two inner surfaces of the clearance hole thus ensuring a perpendicular orientation and a high degree of rotational friction.
When locked the unit adopts the same functional characteristics as a conventional threaded component allowing for fine adjustments to be made by the user.
