Abstract

236,982. Williamson, E. B. March 19, 1924. Reel and non-endless web apparatus.-A strip 8 composed of patterns of stair carpets is displayed in step formation. The strip is wound on two drums 4, 5 and in transfer from one to the other passes round rollers 15, 16, 17, 18 located in the positions of stair rods and front edges of stair treads. The rollers 15, 16, 17, 18 may be pivoted in bearings 11, 12, 13, 14 mounted on inclined supports 9, 10; or they may comprise sleeves mounted on fixed rods, or, when triangular stair rods are employed, may be rollers fitted to the rear of the stair rods. The drums 4, 5 may be rotated manually or by a motor 22 through gearing 24, 28, either being made the winding-on drum by hand, foot, or mechanically operated clutch mechanism which connects belt or chain drives to the drums. Alternatively, the drum flanges 6, 7 may be driven by a friction wheel moved into contact with one or the other, the flanges having, if desired, durable metal &c. extensions. A strip of material other than carpet may connect the end patterns to the drums, and to prevent over-winding a self-acting device, such as a nut riding on a screw, may be employed to switch off the motor or disengage the clutch.
