Abstract

A gas spring for the hatchback or bonnet of a vehicle has a mechanical locking/safety device for restraining the piston rod of a the spring in its extended position by being located between the spring body and distal end of the extended piston rod. The device may be clipped to the piston body (figure 4) and rotated into its locking position (figure 2).

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1> SAFETY STRUT SUPPORT DEVICE This invention relates to a Safety Strut Support Device.
The pneumatic struts which are now fitted to most vehicles have a tendency to fail In so doing the hatch back/bonnet or any other structure which requires support by similar means tend to close involuntarily. The device is designed to prevent this occurrence happening.
The device is designed to clip onto the main part of the pneumatic strut when extended between the knuckle joint which is attached to the hatch/bonnet or the main body of any other structure i.e. piston of the pneumatic strut. When not in use the Safety Strut Support Device is stored by means of one or more fixed spring clips which-clip -onto the main body of the pneumatic strut.
Currently the only remedy that is available is the relatively expensive one of purchasing a replacement pneumatic strut. This invention is-designed to provide a muchless expensive method of support making it unnecessary to purchase a replacement pneumatic strut.
The Safety Strut Support Device is manufactured to suit any size of pneumatic strut and can be made in either stainless steel, plastic moulding or metal which is hot plastic dipped, or metal which is enamel coated. It can also be manufactured as a colour coded item, The specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with referefice-to the accoWanyingkemrings in which: Fig 1 Shows an example of pneumatic strut with the Safety Strut Support Device in use with an open hatch.
Fig 2 Shows in perspective the Safety Strut Support Device fitted to the pneumatic strut.
Fig 3 Illustrates the Safety Strut Support Device separate from the pneumatic strut. Fig 4 Illustrates the Safety Struc Support J'-,e v im So. ed on-the main body-of-the pneumatic strut by one or more spring clips. (Only one spring clip illustrated)

Claims (5)

  1. Claims 1) The Safety Support Strut Device is designed to clip onto the main part of the pneumatic strut when extended, i.e. piston of the pneumatic strut, between the knuckle joint, which is attached to the hatch/bonnet or the main body of any other structure, and the main body of the pneumatic strut, which is also attached to the main body or structure used to support the strut, to@prevent premature/unexpected closure of the aforesaid hatch/bonnet or main body.
  2. 2) The Safety Strut Support Device as claimed in Claim 1, can be manufactured to suit any size of pneumatic strut and can be made in either stainless steel, plastic moulding or metal which is hot plastic dipped, or metal which is enamel coated. It can also be manufactured as a colour coded item.
  3. 3) The Safety Strut Support Device as claimed in Claim I & 2, when not in use the Safety Strut Support Device is stored by means of one or more fixed spring clips, or, with a fixed swivel clamp which is permanently attached, and clip onto the main body of the pneumatic strut.
  4. 4) The Safety Strut Support Device as claimed in Claim 1, 2, & 3, can be known as a Pneumatic Strut Support or any other name denoting to its application.
  5. 5) A Safety Strut Support Device substantially as described herein with reference to Figures I - 5 of the accompanying drawings.
