Description
2363193 SUPPORTING AND ORIENTATING MEANS FOR A COMPACT FINNED UNIT FOR THE
HOT AND COLD TREATMENT OF FLUIDS This invention relates to a compact finned unit for the hot and cold treatment of fluids, and in particular a device for supporting and orientating such a unit.
In general compact finned units for heat exchange between fluids are installed in a fixed position, usually horizontally or vertically, depending on the space available and the direction in which it is desired to convey the flow of air passing through the unit. However, sometimes the horizontal and vertical positions are not suitable for- ensuring proper operation and maximum performance from a heat exchange unit, either because of space limitations or because of obstacles in the vicinity of the unit, or again because it is impossible to direct the flow of air in the most favourable and least disturbing direction.
Furthermore, units which are installed in a vertical position cannot selfclean easily, because they do not allow rainwater to adequately wash the compact unit. In this configuration drainage of the rainwater itself and any condensation may not be encouraged.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a finned heat exchange unit which avoids or at least reduces the abovementioned disadvantages.
A particular object of this invention is to provide a unit which can be easily installed in a horizontal or vertical position, and in all intermediate positions at will.
Another object of the invention is to permit easy change in the inclination of a compact finned unit with respect to the supporting floor at any time and whenever necessary without having any effect on its general structure.
A further object of the invention is to provide a compact finned unit for the hot and cold treatment of fluids from which the fluid can be drained as a result of an arrangement enabling the hydraulic circuit to be wholly drained.
According to the invention there is provided a supporting and orientating means for a compact finned unit for the hot and cold treatment of fluids when in use, said means comprising a supporting frame, the unit being mounted on the frame to be rotatable about a tilting axis which enables the unit to be orientated from the vertical to the horizontal through a multiplicity of intermediate inclined positions.
In order to assist drainage of the unit in all operating positions, the unit may be mounted on and can move about an axis of rotation which is inclined with respect to the supporting surface.
The orientability of the unit offers appreciable flexibility in installation, which is reflected in the possibility that it can be used in narrow spaces, that the discharge air flow from the fans can be directed in the most appropriate direction to keep that air away from the unit's intake, that it is self-cleaning and fluids are drained in the vertical position and that the noise of the machine is reduced.
With the axis of rotation inclined with respect to the supporting surface, the unit may be arranged in such a way that the fluid which has to be drained off can be collected and evacuated from a corner of the unit.
The present invention will now be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figures 1 and 2 show a compact finned unit mounted in the vertical position on an orientatable frame, in side and front views.
Figures 3 and 4 show the same views of the unit, mounted in the horizontal position, Figures 5a, 5b and 5c show the unit mounted in various positions on the frame between the two walls of an industrial installation, Figures 6, 7, 8 and 9 show a unit which can be drained in the horizontal and vertical positions respectively, with the inclination necessary for drainage of the fluid, in side and front views, and Figure 10 shows a unit mounted in an inclined position to orientate the noise in a favourable direction.
The said drawings illustrate a compact finned unit 10 mounted on a frame 11 which can be orientated by rotation about axis X defined by bearings 12. In Figures 1-4 the unit is placed in two extreme vertical and horizontal positions which allow the air flow to be located in a horizontal direction and upwards respectively. The unit may however be located at any inclination between the said extreme positions.
The intermediate inclined positions as shown in the drawings are useful for example in cases where there is little space for its installation, such as between an outside wall and a perimeter wall of an industrial installation, in that it enables the cold air delivered by the unit to pass over obstacles facing it. In fact, if the unit were to be mounted in a horizontal position there might not be a sufficient intake volume for the fans, with a consequent limitation on the cooling power of the unit, in addition to its performance. If the unit were to be mounted in a vertical position, the air expelled by the fans could be partly returned to the unit by the obstacle in front, again diminishing the performance of the unit.
Another example of the application of an advantageously orientated unit is illustrated in Figure 10, where it is located and installed in the vicinity of a dwelling. In this case the frame prevents noise being directed towards th.e building, contrary to what would happen if the unit was mounted vertically.
Inclining the rotational axis of the unit on the frame also makes it possible to incline a unit by a few degrees with respect to the vertical so as to allow the rain to adequately wash the finned unit and drain the self-cleaning fluids from the unit.
For the fluid to be capable of being drained off - Figures 6-9, the tilting axis X of the unit on the frame must be located with the necessary inclination for total drainage of the hydraulic circuit. Then bearings 12 on which the unit is mounted are not axially located but arranged so as to create a gradient P in the unit which is useful for its complete drainage. This also applies when the unit is mounted vertically or horizontally. An even minimum inclination (X is then sufficient in combination with gradient P to permit the fluid to be delivered to a corner of the unit from which it can be drained off.
