Polishing.-In a machine for fine-polishing tumblers or other glassware, the shapes or supports for the tumblers are externally ribbed or of skeleton form in order that the flame from the burners can enter the tumblers. The ware is thus polished on the inside simultaneously with the rounding of the rim and the polishing of the outside. The supports a, Fig. 1, are mounted near the edge of a horizontal revolving table b by which they are carried through a furnace or glory hole c in the known manner. Each support a is formed with external ribs d, Fig. 5, and is provided with a cap f which is mounted on a spindle g that passes down through the support. A pinion h, secured to the lower end of the spindle g, gears with a circular rack n secured to the machine bed p, so that the cap f is rotated by the movement of the table b. The lower end of the spindle g makes contact with an undulating circular track r secured to the machine bed, so that the movement of the table also causes a vertical reciprocation of the cap f. Thus a tumbler, as it is carried round by the table, is continually lifted from and is rotated relatively to its support, and is prevented from contracting between the ribs d. A jet of air from a nozzle s prevents the glass from sticking to the support. In modified constructions, the caps f are non rotary and the supports are rotated, or the supports and caps are rotated in opposite directions, or in the same direction but at different speeds. The supports may also be reciprocated instead of the caps.
