ANDREYV J.' SANFORP, OF NNTARH, GHIO, ASSIGN'OR TO A. H. HEISEY & CO., INC., OF
NEWARK. OHIO, A CORPORATION-OF WEST VIRGINLA.
BURNER FORA FIRE-POLISHING GLAS-SWARE.
To all whom it may' concern:
Be it known that l. xoniiw J. SANFORD, a resident of Newark. in the county of Licking and State of Ohio. have invented a new and useful inpro vement in Burners for Firelolishine' Glassware: and l do hereby declare. the following' to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to apparatus ior tire polishing' glassware and iiiore particularly to burners for such purpose, its object being to provide a flame surface on the burner which shall lie praeti ally continuous so as to operate on the surface of the article to be polished as it is rotated.
The 1ourner is suitable for use in connection with certain methods ot' re polishing` as described in applications tiled hy nie ot even d ate herewith, Serial Nos'. 504,552 and 504,553.
The. burner of the present invention `consists in a burner bo'dy having jet orifices of slit form formed in the body thcreot'ifor the escape of the gas and air. such slit openings providing for the formation of longitudinal tiaine jets overlapping each other and so providingfor the positive contact. ot the llame -iets with the entire surface of the article to be polished. lt also includes the combination therewith ot means for rotatingl the ai ticle so as to ekpose its entire surfacer to contact with such longitudinally extending jet Haines, as well as other improvenients as hereinafter set forth.
ln the accompanying drawings Figure l is a section oiefirc polishing apparatus suitable for tire polishingthe interior of a Aglass article; Fig. Q is a like view suitable for polishiner the exterior of the glass article; and Fig. 3 is a side view partly in section einliodying the invention.
The invention is illustrated for use in connection with suitable apparatus to support the article to be fire polished. As shown the article 1 rests on a lsuitable support or holder Q or 3 carried upon a vertically moving shaft 4, which inits raised position is adapted to be rotated by suitable power connections, tor instance, a worin Wheel 5 on said shaft 4 driven by a suitable worin 6. Two burners are shown in the drawings, one tor exterior tire polishing, as at'. l'. and one tor interior lire polishing` as shown at 5%. ln each ease Speccaton of Letters Patent.
Application filed .Tune 26, 1909. Serial No. 504,551.
Patented linie 28, 15910.
the burner is suspended troin an air and gas pipe 9. through which air under pressure ant gas are supplied in any suitable way.
.is illustrated in Fig. 2 the burner cousists ot' the mixing' chamber l() formed of a suitable casting` to which the` burner body is seein-ed, the burner having; the body portion and the hollow 'jet face 13,
This jetface is illustrated as formed of a suitable castinghaving' thin Walls and the jet open ii 's are composed of suitablel slits 14 running up and down and overlapping,` each other, as illust ated These slit openings are of very Small diameter but of suiiicient length to overlap as above stated, so that when the article resting on the supporting holder 2 is rotated the. longitudinally extending flame jets on the outer face of the burner lap and play over the surface of the article and complete contact of the lire polishiiig` tiame jets with the surface of the article is thus insured. The slit openings may be arranged in any desired way, the only requirement being that they shall lap each other and so produce a series of flame jets ot' such width of flame as shall insure'eontaet between the flame jets and the entire surface of the article to be polished.
In Fig. 1 I have illustrated substantially the same construction eveeptV that it is applied to the re polishing of the. interior of the article, as described in application tiled by me of even date herewith, Serial No. 504,552. ln this case the jet orices are formed on the projection or cone 14' of the burner and they overlap each other as above stated, the jet slits 15 extending; over the base ot' the cone and up the side walls thereof, and if necessary, like slits being formed in the apron portion 1G of the burner.
ln the exterior lire polishing ot bowls as the llame in escaping' from the burner naturally rises, and passes upwardly around the body of the burner, it is somewhat ditlicult to insure the projection ot the saine against the edge ofthe bowl, and to generate sufficient heat at this point to properly inelt the edge, removing the fin and rounding the outer square edge thereon produced in the pressing operation. To overcome this difficulty l provide the burner for exterior fi-ie polishingr with an annular inwardly extendflame and heat inwardly against the edge portion of the article and causes the saine to play over the outer edge thereof. and so insures the generation of Sulicient heat'at this point to melt and round such outer edge, producing a proper tinish of the saine. l
Whatclaim is:
l. A burner for fire polishing glassware having a series of jet. openings of slit forni overlapping each other.
2. In apparatus for yfire polishing glassware, the combination of a burner having a series of jet orifices or' slit forni overlapping ich other, and a rotating support forthe article to be polished.
A hnrncr for lire polishing glassware having a concave jet face provided with jet openinfrs and at the base thereof an annular inv'ard y extending lip portion.
e. The combination of a burner for fire poiishing glassware having a concave jet face provided with jet openin s and at the base thereof an annular invvar ly extending lip portion, and a rapport for the article entering within the concave burner.
5. The combination of a tourner4 for lire polishing glassware having a concave jet ace provided with jet openings and at the base thereof an annular inwardl T extendinfr 35 lip portion, and a Support for the article entering Within the concave burner and supporting the edge of the article above such inwardly projecting lip.
ln testimony whereof, I the said ANDREW 40 J. SANFORD have hereunto set my hand.
A NDREW J.- SANFORP Vfitnesses E. J. MonA'rrE, J. E. SNELLING.
