Abstract

Corn-silos; storage bins.-A method of storage of vegetable material consists in first covering the material without compression, enclosing a small quantity of air, and then applying pressure to expel the air and reduce the temperature. The material is placed in a silo 10 having a counterweighted heavy cover 12, the walls and cover being insulated. Heating elements may be mounted in the silo. A thermometer inserted in the material operates an alarm. The counterweight may be heavier than the cover and supported by a cable attached to a winch that can be released when the cover is to be opened. In another arrangement the beam 41, Fig. 3, upon which the pulleys 44 are carried, can be raised by gearing 36, the pressure being thus taken off the upright 52 which is adjustably connected to the support 51 attached to the cover. Passages 18, 20 for the application of air at suitable temperatures may be provided in the walls and interior of the silo. The silo is applicable for the storage of granular materials.
