Electrolytic rectifiers.-An electrolytic rectifier has a tantalum electrode and an electrolyte of dilute sulphuric acid having a specific gravity of about 1.2. The other electrode is preferably lead or carbon. The tantalum, electrode is preferably in the form of a thin sheet having an area of about 2 sq. cm. per ampere of rectified current. In order to ensure the permanency of the tantalum electrode, the voltage across the electrodes is kept below 27 volts, for example by means of a fuse or relay, a step-down transformer being employed where necessary. The temperature of the cell is kept low, for instance by the provision of radiating fins on the container or by employing a large volume of electrolyte.
