Beating.-A machine for beating gold leaf &c. comprises a helved hammer a rotated anvil and a cam acting through a lever and a slide to influence the lateral disposition of the helve to distribute the blows. The metal to be beaten is placed on a pad resting on a wooden, rubber &c. receiver or recessed face in the anvil a which is rotated by bevel gearing from the shaft b driven through worm gearing k<2>, Fig. 3, and variable gearing O of the diving-key type from the main shaft q, driven through a hand-controlled clutch s<1> or by fast and loose pulleys. The helve c fits into a bored socket c<2>, Fig. 7, slidable on two shafts c<3>, c<4> connected by links d. A rod e with upper and lower springs e<1>, e<2> passes through a swivelling die d<1> in the socket c<2>. The rod e is reciprocated to actuate the hammer by the linkage f from a crank disc f<3> on the main shaft. Stroke adjustment is provided at e<3>. The blows are distributed by a cam k on the shaft b, Fig. 7, which acts through bowls j<1>, j<2> on a sliding block, a lever h, and a rod i carrying a flanged boss i<1> which slides the socket c<2> carrying the hammer. A counterweight n maintains the mechanism in engagement with the cam. As the beating proceeds, the fulcrum h<1>, Figs. 2 and 7, of the lever h is raised by a screw h<3> so that the movement of the rod i increases and the blows are distributed more widely. The screw is rotated through bevel gears h<6> and ratchet gearing h<9> by an eccentric on the shaft b. A hand-wheel h<14> reverses the action and lowers the lever fulcrum h<1>. In starting, the hammer is made to deliver a number of blows in one position by providing cut-away portions hx on the lever so that the bowl j<2> does not contact with the lever until it has travelled some distance upwards.
