Abstract
235,429. Koeniger, W., and Kiwull, W. Sept. 4, 1924. Sunken ships and objects, raising; floating- docks.-A rigid vertical caisson or caissons is or are attached to the side of a sunken ship or other object by the formation under water of a connecting layer of ice, and means are provided for righting the ship or maintaining it upright so that after emptying the caisson or caissons the ship on being raised will take a substantially upright position. A bottom horizontal caisson may be provided to form with the vertical caisson or caissons a floating dock for the raised vessel. The caisson 1, Fig. 1, is attached to the side of the ship by an ice layer 3. To avoid freezing the water in the caisson an insulating layer 4 may be provided. This layer may take the form of an air space. The refrigerating plant 5 may be mounted on the upper side of the caisson or arranged within it, and the cooling water required may be taken from the inside of the caisson, enabling the caisson to be emptied simultaneously with the freezing on. A second caisson may be attached to the other side of the. ship, or the arrangement shown in Figs. 4, 6 and 7 may be used. In this arrangement, a caisson 1a and two smaller caissons 1b, 1c form a floating salvage dock. The caissons 1b and 1c are coupled together, sunk, and attached to the side of the ship by the ice layer 3 as shown in Fig. 4. When the ship has been brought to the surface, the caisson 1a is connected to the caisson 1c so as to lie below the keel of the ship. By partly emptying the caisson 1a and filling the caisson 1c the ship is turned into the position shown in Fig. 6, when it may be towed into harbour. By emptying all the caissons the vessel may be raised into the vertical position shown in Fig. 7. The caissons can be secured together to form a floating dock for use in the harbour after the salvage operations. Specification 219,011 is referred to.
