Abstract

A device for warning motorists of an approaching location wherein a roadside vehicle speed detector is located includes a GPS sensor providing real time coordinate data identifying the location of the vehicle, and a memory holding a local database of coordinate data identifying the geographical locations of roadside vehicle speed detectors. Means are then provided for computing from a comparison of the real time and stored data the position of the vehicle relative to the speed detectors, and a warning signal is generated and/or displayed whenever the computing means determines that the vehicle is within a predetermined distance of one or more of the speed detectors. The predetermined distance may be speed-dependent. The device may also store speed limits and determine the vehicle's speed using the GPS, and only warn the driver if he is exceeding the speed limit.; The device may also store the direction in which detectors face, and only warn the driver if he is moving in a direction liable to detection. The database may be downloaded from a central server.
