Abstract

234,927. Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd., and Penfold, A. E. March 13, 1934. Balls. - The inner core of a tennis or like ball having a gas content, is composed of two or more parts of non-porous material such as gutta perch and / or balata, the parts being joined and sealed with gastight joints. A preferred mixing for the material of the core has the following percentage composition by weight :-purined balata 25; washed balata 15; smoked sheet rubber 30; sulphur 10; zinc oxide 20. The material is formed into hemispherical cups B which are joined together and the joint sealed by means of a band e of the same material. The band e may be formed integral with one of the cups or may be applied separately. The core is covered by a layer of soft rubber c and is then vulcanized. The core may be inflated through the usual plug, or in the case of a plugless ball, by means of a mixture of sodium nitrite and ammonium chloride. The usual felt cover A is finally applied. According to the Provisional Specification the material of the core may have the following percentage composition by weight : deresinated balata, 15; balata 25; india-rubber 30; zinc oxide 20; sulphur 10. As a result of vulcanization the core loses its semi-rigidity, and becomes resilient.
